Like a lot of the longer term slaves to this site, I removed the silencer ring a year or so ago, ran a while then reinstalled it. Then a couple of days ago while working on a air filter project I pulled the 4" hose off the turbo and the snap ring and silencer fell out.

That's right, they had been just setting there, spinning around, getting banged up, loosing little bits of metal here and there.

If necessary, it's possible I could place the aluminum silencer back in service, however, the snap ring was deformed (not much, but some) and not usable.

I've installed a lot of snap rings, never had this happen before. The old truck is making about 35-37 lbs of boost now and that could have been a factor, more likely the ring just wasn't seated properly.

I was lucky the snap ring didn't go through the turbo, you might want to check if you've ever had yours out and reinstalled it.

Good luck, Ronnie

I was going to reinstall mine too but when I put the snap ring back in it didn't look like it was seated as solidly as it was originally. I was a little concerned about it coming loose with the volume of air going through there so I removed it again. I think the slot that the snap ring fits in is easily deformed.

My silencer ring is permanently in the toolbox (should be in the trash) because of the same things that you guys found. I had a nice piece turned on a lathe to improve (?) the air flow. It is nice to have friends with a lathe. Does it improve anything? I don't know, but it looks interesting when I take off the air hose.

Get This!!

I took my Silencer ring out, not two weeks after I got my truck. A good thing too, because when I took the hose off, the snap ring wasn't even all the way seated.

It may not hurt to just check.

As I recall, its a wave type snap ring, and is a bit tricky to reinstall properly. I had mine out until I got a K&N, then I couldn't stand the noise.

I remember this topic being thrown around last summer. Someone said that a rep from DC said that removal would not do anything or void warranty; however, he also said that you shouldn't try to reinstall for the same reason as stated above. He said that there was trouble with the snap ring re-instalation and you could really mess things up.

I had mine out then reinstalled. When I did put it back in I found that due to thickness of the aluminum silencer that it was easy to get it caught in the snap ring groove thus not allowing a proper fit for the snap ring. I had to play with it a little to get it centered and allow the snap ring to seat in the groove all the way around. Just my . 02 worth... ... ... . Watch out!!!!

By the way I put it back in because I did not notice any diff. with a stock air filter. I am planning on buying a Amsoil filter this weekend and will try again for some sounds. Anybody else out there notice any diff. with a stock filter?

I took the ring out and noticed a sound change with the stock air filter. Then I installed an Amsoil filter and the sound level went up more noticeably Last week I took the “snorkel” off the air box and did not hear much difference. I think there are 2 distinct sounds: the high-pitch turbo whine and the sound of air rushing thru the intake. You don’t hear the rush of air at all with a stock system. The high-pitch whine can get on your nerves but the air rush sound is just too COOL!:D

I had mine out until I installed the Banks PowerPack (which comes with a filter made for Banks by K&N). The turbo whine sounded cool for the first 30 minutes and then was getting on my nerves and (especially) the wife's nerves. I put the ring back in and notice that the snap ring doesn't fit as well... . so what's the correct procedure/fix?
