A friend of mine is looking to get a 2nd gen, can't remember if there were any years to look out for or any years that were better than others. Much abliged to all who respond, Alex

Oh yeah, he's looking for a 4x4 Auto

Avoid the dreded 53 block, and the 2001. 5, and 2002 trucks have disc brakes all the way around. Check the codes by turning the key 3 x's, and make sure that there aren't any bad ones, (0216 is the death code for injection pumps). Good luck.

He could avoid lots of problems and go for the early 98' 12V. Not all 98's or 99's are a Quadcab. Some came with the Clubcab if that's important. Since he's looking for an auto they're a little more available. The 97' & up have better brakes. There's a frontend linkage upgrade from the factory. Not sure what year that started. Regardless of year I'd buy a DSS for the steering. Good chance the tracbar will also need replacement. I bought the Napa tracbar with lifetime warranty. There's lots of opinions here on the TDR on tracbars. Many of them probably better than mine. The tracbar is easy to swap out and Napa is 3blocks from my house.

Is he planning on running a slidein camper? Might want to opt for a dually. The auto 3/4ton came with a rear Dana 70. All other configurations have the Dana 80.

Good Luck.

The only thing he pulls is a boat, maybe 4-5k. where on the engine do I have to look for the dreaded #53. Thanks for all the help guys, Alex
