Columbia Teacher Comments Irk Some

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 3:59 p. m. ET

NEW YORK (AP) -- A Columbia University professor told an anti-war gathering that he would like to see ``a million Mogadishus'' -- referring to the 1993 ambush in Somalia that killed 18 American servicemen.

At Wednesday night's ``teach-in'' on the Columbia campus, Nicholas De Genova also called for the defeat of U. S. forces in Iraq and said, ``The only true heroes are those who find ways that help defeat the U. S. military. '' And he asserted that Americans who call themselves ``patriots'' are white supremacists.

De Genova's comments about defeating the United States in Iraq were cheered by the crowd of 3,000, Newsday reported. But his mention of the Somali ambush -- ``I personally would like to see a million Mogadishus'' -- was largely met with silence.

A call Friday to De Genova, 35, an assistant professor of anthropology, was answered with a recording that said his voice mailbox was full.

Columbia spokesman Joe Kennedy said the university was preparing a statement about the event.

History professor Eric Foner, who helped organize the teach-in and spoke after De Genova, said Friday, ``I disagreed strongly and I said so. If I had known what he was going to say I would have been reluctant to have him speak. ''

He said De Genova was a last-minute invitee, was just one of about 25 speakers and ``did not represent the general tone of the event, which was highly educational. ''

I too e-mailed a polite note to remove Mr DeGenova from the staff.

I would like to remove him myself but, it's not my job. You know... I'm very good at removing trash like that and it's too bad that I haven't been asked:rolleyes:

I too e-mailed my thoughts. He is a disgrace to our country, our military and that University.

It never ceases to amaze me how far out some peoples opinions will go. This one takes the "cake".

He's hiding

Just read a story on Mr. Genova; he is not going to his classes and no one seems to know where he is. He had been getting threats on his life so he decided to Hide. Justice!

I just hear on the TV that lots of parents are calling the school telling them they will pull there kids out of the school unless they fire this guy.

And alumni are also calling saying they will pull there donations unless this guy gets fired. Money talks, and this guys BS will cause him to walk.

Kinda chaps your a$$ don't it! I sent him a nice, personal letter that should be received with the warmth that I intended!

Gee, what a shock. ;) I think we'd all be happy if he never surfaced again. :D

I'm a strong supporter of the First Amendment, but IMHO this is beyond the limits of free speech.

I try not to wish bad things on anyone, but people like this are making it very difficult... .....
