I saw this yesterday - it was fantastic.....coming this Sunday..... a must see.....

They were sent to Mars on a 90-day mission, but almost five years later the rovers Spirit and Opportunity have traveled farther, seen more, and survived longer than anyone imagined possible, earning a place among the most prolific explorers in history.

Its so good to see us striving to push the envelope into space again. These kind of feats are amazing. Like Dave Scott said, we have sort of been "regrouping" after Apollo 17, and now its like we're starting to pick up where we left off. . We're going back to the moon and to mars soon. I cant wait to see it.

yea aleast our dollares (rovers) lasted beyond the year shelf life stamped on them by Nasa

Wonder if they could develop a rover in the form of a pickup that could travel around on this planet with no breakdowns for 5 years.



In all serious, and as someone with a degree in engineering, I am amazed at this accomplishment. The female engineer who graduated about 4 years after me at my college was the lead programmer on the software for Opportunity. At least thats what my quarterly report said from my school a few issues back.
