A new cummins to our family

We just got a new combine (used, but new to us) and it has an 8. 3 cummins in it, man I love the sound of it, it has a lot deeper sound then its little brother. Just thought I'd tell of our new family member, I hope it turns out to be a good, reliable engine.

Many school buses use the 8. 3 C Model. Bluebird front and rear engine and Thomas rear engine applications.



What brand of binder did you acquire?



Have you ever been over to the (Ohio) Farm Science Review. LOTS of Cummins power on display there. All sizes too. Pretty cool to have an engine in the pickup that is also found in a dozer and farm tractor.

We got a Case International, Is the 8. 3 just as reliable as the old 5. 9 12 valves?

I don't have any of the "C" models. However, I believe they be overengineered just like the "B"

The motor home folks sure like 'em! One of them decked-out 40 footers passed the house last week sans muffler. Climbing that long hill sure sounded good. I really enjoy the sound of the Cummins under a load @ 1800 rpm.

The marine crowd likes them too. They run from 300 to about 450 HP for marine use.

300-450hp the one in our combine is only rated at 190hp. it must not be working very hard if it is rated up to 450, well I would assume it should last a lot longer than the rest of the machine.

At 190 it's not even breathing hard

Well it sounds like you got at least a 91 or newer 1680 Case IH. I run about 450 acres of crops threw mine every year and it is rounding out to the tune of 6000 hours as we speak and still runs great. I have rebuilt or replaced almost every other wear part on the combine for the 1st time but have yet to touch the engine. Congrats on the purchase!



BTW... how much did you have to give for it and how many hours?

We got a 1660, I think it is supposed to be a 90 but maybe a 91, we gave 25,000 for it with 3,385 on it. It is actually in very good shape compared to all the other ones we looked at and all of the other ones were more money.
