How Can you tell between an HX -HY.....

Has anyone mated the ZF transmission from a powersroke to a cummins when they did the conversion. I got a friend that wants to do the cummins conversion in his 96 F350, but wants to keep his fresh rebuilt ZF if it is possible.

I bought a ZF6 adapter from Fordcummins. It was 800 bucks. The ZF5 adapters are 100 less. The machining looks excellent and I will be assembling it all this week. I will post up the results.

:) I used the ZF out of a 95 gasser. It's practically the same, except for the bell housing. It's the S5-42 model and not the newer S5-47 (like in your friends truck, it's rated higher) and the radio is different with a lower 1st gear. It has worked great for the last 30K miles behind the cummins and 155K behind the gasser, but I am putting the zf6 in now because of the 1 3/8" input shaft I can use for the SBDD. I think the zf5 is the best 5 speed, IMOH. :D

I used the ZF5 that was original behind the 460 in my conversion. It's got a substantial amount of "gear rollover" noise in 4th gear but other than that it has been great.

12V: I'd be interested to know what kind of obstacles you run into swapping to the ZF6. Keep me posted.
