A silly question about egt probe installation.

Ok so I have my nice nifty new truck and I feel it is time to play. I will install nice boost and egt guages to keep it all in check. Boost is easy, just a boost bolt away, dont overtighten and make sure it is well sealed.



Now for the egt probe? Where do I put this? In the exhaust stream of course but pre turbo in the manifold? In the elbow after the turbo? Is the elbow thick enough to drill and tap? Get a bung welded on the downpipe? Do I need to pull the manifold to drill it?

Sorry if the question is silly but I just want to get it right the first time... ...

I did see the install write up on here with pics, but I thought it belonged after the turbo(thats where it was on my sad old fd 6. 9 turbo).

Pre-turbo in the manifold between cylinders 3 & 4 is the way to go. For Sh*** and giggles I put 2 egt guages, one pre-turbo and one post-turbo in the downpipe.

Pre-turbo is way most guys go, therefore there is far more data to compare your numbers against. No you don't need to pull the manifold to drill it, do a search and you will find plenty of step by step instructions. Have fun with the truck and try not to pick on too many ricers.

go to www.edgeproducts.com and download the instructions for the edge Juice/attitude for your truck. They have instructions for drilling the pyro probe hole. Where they show to drill is best, I think. They've obviously done the research for the best place to place the pyro.

What kind of temperature differences do you see between the pre & post guages?

I've heard it's anywhere between 150 & 600 degs. One guy, recently, said that he had seen about 600 degrees difference with a performance box on.



Usually, you assume a 300 deg. difference.

I put mine pre-turbo on the exhaust manifold flange left of center just above were it bolts to the turbo housing. Don't drill in the center of the flange because it is split down the middle. You have to drill to the left or right of center. From what I understand is that #6 is the hottest cylinder, and that is why I went left of center. The inner fender liner comes out with 6-7 screws and nothing is attached to it and I used an air drill with a short drill bit. I drilled slow with alot of grease on the drill bit and changing it alot. I have had no problems with mine. I have an 2004. 5

I haven't done mine yet (probably get to it this weekend), but I do remember reading somewhere to idle the engine while you are drilling as the manifold pressure will blow the debris out as you break through... . sounds like a good idea to me!
