We were returning from Montana towing the travel trailer when I looked at the pyrometer and saw that the EGT was 1500 pre-turbo! I would never exceed 1250. It was a big surprise; the truck was hardly working.
On the next hill I put it in 3rd and floored the accellerator. Power was poor and I was only getting 8-10 lbs of boost. I had blown off the hose between the turbo and intercooler. As part of my routine maintenance I tighten these clamps but it must have been awhile since the last time. With an engine that runs like the Cummins it is easy to forget.
I stopped at the Fying-J in Post Falls, fueled up and parked the truck. I carry a tool box in the truck: twenty minutes later the problem was repaired.
These trucks need gauges! I am completely stock but high EGT could have ruined my engine. The low boost was causing about a 600 degree rise in EGT. Even when everything is working OK it is possible to exceed 1250 when towing with a stock truck. I watch my gauge and gear down when EGT it too high.
The boost gauge is less critical but it did make troubleshooting easy. Besides, it is fun to watch.
