While in the process of replacing clutch, the inside of the bell housing is thick of gunk. I am thinking that perhaps there is a slow leak in the rear main seal??? I am planning to replace while am that far, as I am also reaplcing the flywheel. Any suggestions.

Also how tight is that seal - is a slide hammer the only way to remove?

Thanks Charles

Possible Source?

You have a 5 speed, these have a seal under the transmission front bearing retainer that might be leaking. If you read the service manual they FIRMLY recommend/require that you replace the retainer bolts if you take it off for service.

Q. Is the back of the F/W grimy? If it is clean, the seal might not be the source. Is it coming off of the block from somewhere else?
