How difficult is it to change a tailshaft housing seal? I'm developing a small leak and I plan on doing the replacement myself. What tools are required? TIA
All you gotta do is mark the driveline (for reassembly purposes) and, and then remove it. Pop the old seal out, put the new one in, bolt the driveline back in, and you're done. Doesn't get much easier than that.
Evan is right, I've replaced that seal on many trucks and it's pretty hard to screw it up. If you have the 2 piece driveshaft I think you have to drop the center bearing but that's easy too. Just your common hand tools are needed. A seal puller is nice but a screwdriver to pry it out works too.
Be careful to not gouge a groove in the tailshaft housing as you pry out the old seal - and apply a thin coat of RTV sealant on the outside of the new seal before installing it - it might help to park the truck on a downhill slope so transmission lube doesn't start running outta the tailshaft when you remove the driveline and seal - can get messy!
Thanks for the input. The leak seems to have gone away. Since I just had the new clutch put in, it could have been lube that ran into the seal boot when they pulled the driveshaft. My neighbor's automatic is having the same problem and he wants to fix it. Guess we'll do his truck.
