The inline 6 is more commonly used because to generates more torque! But I do not understand why Ford and GM opted for a V-8? If the 5. 9 can fit under the hood of a Dodge, and have lots of room to work on it, they could have also used a 6!

I believe that overall the Cummins is a better engineered Diesel, in that they have been able to deal the emission issue better than most.

I find that many OTR drivers have perferred the Cummins to other diesels as of late. I know I would if I still had that class of truck. It is more widely used in Motorhomes, but look who makes the most chassises for this industry!! If you own a DC product you should know the answer to the question!

I have often wondered why DC and Cummins haven't gotten in the motorhome business. I'm sure there must be a good reason.

I think they have - at least my brother in law said he got info from Winnebago about one of their units with a Cummins diesel on a Dodge chassis - some smaller Cummins than our trucks, but he wasn't sure exactly which ome...

I thought Winnebago was utilizing the Sprinter Chassis for the small winnie's. Didn't know they had a cummins and dodge version out too. That would be a nice coach.

On The note about Commercial engines being a cummins majority in the truck market, I don't think that's accurate. In the light weight HDT engines, Cummins may have a large # out there, but in the heavy haul rigs, Detroit and Cat are at the top.

While I have the utmost faith in my 5. 9, I would take my detroit 12. 7 litre series 60 engine in my Volvo truck over any Cummins Heavy Duty engine option. The Detroit engine in my Volvo gets better fuel than any Cummins engine equipped truck I have driven from the same model year group. Detroit has had the electronic control on their engines longer than most any other, the DDEC3 is in my eyes the best over the road engine for power and longevity there is.

Cat's are just too much money for what they offer anymore, good engines, but the upkeep cost is much higher than the others.

With Cummins putting out boat anchors like the M-11 series and the ISX's, I will most likely never give them a second look. (unless its a B series, 3. 9 or 5. 9 series)

I work for Cummins at Columbus, In. I worked in the tec center that developed the B-series diesel starting in 1979. I worked in that group 14 years and I can tell you for sure the engine is not a design taken from an Onan engine.

They are in the Motorhome business! Who owns Frightliner, and how many manufactures use Frightliner Chassis in there Diesel and Class A motorhomes!

They may not actually build the motorhomes but they might as well be!
