Hey KEENO, Hello my 12cm^2 friend!!!!

When I took the truck in to the muffler shop today, they parked it on a hoist and raised it well into the air. Within a few moments, there were 3 puddles of engine oil on the floor under the truck. I walked around, noticing that there was suddenly oil on the bumper, tailgate, axle, frame, hubcabs, truck side, all OVER...

Well, the oil appeared to be coming from higher up, and while running, it was only dripping, so I drove it from the muffler shop to a quick lube place 4 blocks away. Anyway, they did a "leak check" which they do for free... disovered the oil filter was 1-2 rounds loose!!!

Somewhere between mid day Christmas Eve (last time I had the hood open) and mid-morning today, the truck began leaking. It appears to have lost something between a quart and two quarts.

Anyway, could have been a SERIOUS disaster, but it wasn't...

Do angels have filter wrenches to hold on loose filters? Maybe...

Someone must have changed oil just before the dealer got the truck, and obviously didn't tighten it well. Has anyone else had the filter come loose?

Yikes, good thing everything tuned out ok. Perhaps it was the dealer himself? Every used vehicle I have bought from a dealer has always had the oil changed as part of the mandatory safety inspection they have to do. At least here in Washington state... .

thank goodness for us good quick lube operators that will "leak check" a car for anyone... ...

i have found a few filters that take a lot to get tight, was it a wix or napa? by chance..... well at least your are ok pw

common problem

This is the reason why this is the one application where I use a wrench to tighten the oil filter. The Mopar filters are marked A,B,C,D around the body with instructions to turn 3/4 turn after handtight, ei. D-C. The Fleetgaurd filters used to come with lines printed vertically on the filter, the instructions said to place a filter wrench on bottom of the filter and tighten til lines flexed. Used to see lots of these come into the dealers I used to work for after the quick lubes bunged them up.

Oh no.....

Did you say the dreaded FRAM word? How could you drive it up from CA with a FRAM installed? I have heard bad things about Fram oil filters here on the TDR.....

This is one of the reasons why I do all my own work. Whoever the CHODE was that did the oil and filter was probably in a hurry to get to a date.

I have this thing that I do. I double check my work before I use it.

What? ? ?

Are there any bad words about the K&N Oil filter?

I like it because of the 1 inch nut welded to the bottom. I tighten it until I don't want to; and leave it.

We noticed an oil leak on my buddies 96, the Fram filter had vibrated loose. I know it was tight, he is very consciencious about his truck and he is a heavy equip. and diesel mechanic. I completely forgot about this until just now, I need to tell him to quit using Fram.

Hey PW, I had the exact same thing happen to me!!!!! Mine was not a fram filter but it did vibrate loose. I caught mine as I was doing an underhood inspection. I always tighten my First Gen. filter with a wrench. On the rare occasion I don't do it myself I watch the quick lube guys very closely and remind them to get it tighter than 3/4 turn past contact of gasket.

Glad you caught it in time.

I should win the stupid award for what I am about to tell  :D , I changed my oil once and only added 2 gallons (8 quarts) instead of 3 gallons. I don't know whether to call it a Blonde moment or simply a case of having my head up my arse!!!! For those interested, I only drove about a mile to fill up with diesel and decided to check my oil again. It was up about 2 inches on the stick. It had normal Oil Pressure from start up, and found out later that the sump sits fairly deep in the pan. On marine 6B's it will have oil pressure with only 6 quarts!!!! But would surely be on the verge of sucking air with any increase in rpm's.

Glad you caught it in time. I'm afraid to say the same thing happened to me. I was on a trip, and started it cold in the morning, I did a walk around, and noticed it coming out at a constant flow, ran inside and shut down. I opened the hood and noticed the filter had backed off, I did not notice any oil prior to start-up, so needless to say I always do a walk around, and carry a couple of extra qts on the road. Happy Holidays.
