The dealer ordered the parts needed, but STAR would not authorize the work. The dealer told me the response from STAR was that my CTD is a heavy duty work truck, and heavy duty trucks make heavy duty noises. I guess, rear end whine and howling is to be expected. If I really believed this, I'd call the Ghostbusters for repair. The howling is incredibility irritating at 45 to 55 mph. If this is the service I can expect with only 850 miles, I'm going to start looking at a Duramax or test drive several CTDs until I find one without the heavy duty howling.

I sympathize with you. I had an Avalanche with a rear end whine when on the gas at about 45 to 55 mph. They were real good about it. Replace the ring and pinion and eliminated about 80% of the noise.

My new '04 Ram 3500 SRW Quad Cab 4x2 has a very slight whine, but only when slowing down and off the go pedal. I also have close to 900 miles on my truck. Other than that it is awsome. I did have the sound that sounds like an owl, but only on one morning on the way to work. Was a little chilly that morning (for Florida) at around 50 deg. Hopefully that sound will not come back. Ironically, I had a BMW that had a very similar owl sound but only at around 80 with my foot holding it at a steady speed.

Don't know if any of this helps much. I left Dodge back in '98 because they wouldn't resolve a simple problem on a brand new truck. I got irritated and went F***. I have to admit, I really like this new Ram. The dealer seems decent. Will know better if I ever need them for service. Good 'ol boys from Okeechobee, FL.

No resolution to the gear whine, and the dealer appears to have used the wrong refill lube. The service order lists 4 of #4874469 and 2 of #4318060AB. I'm not sure of the complete part number, but I thought the part number for the 75w-90 synthetic began with a 521?? Any info as to the identity of the two lubes?

My experience with the Danas in the 2500 and 3500 trucks ALL made some noise NEW that faded with a few thousand miles but if tuned in could till hear them. . could really hear them with a slider back glass open more on coast. I hear some from my 11. 5 on coast but its got a BIG ring and PINION. Unless its a definite HOWL No worries from me on some noise. Just my 02 worth.

My truck, 03 3500 drw 2wd is at the dealer now. They told me today they would be going into the rear axle on Thursday, they have had the truck since Tuesday morning.

The service manager said there was definately something wrong, but they were not sure what it was and that they are still looking.

Anyone give me odds on if they

1. find anything

2. if they find something, do they fix it

3. They all make that noise (standby answer for anything)

My 03 started whining & vibrating on deceleration at 15000. I thought it was rear, they changed u-joint. Still did it. They changed entire driveshaft assembly. Ran smooth as silk after that! I think there was a bearing problem.

Dealer just called about my truck, said they were ordering parts.

He did not know which parts though, or when they would get there or when the truck would be ready.

But they did give me a Neon to drive.

Is it possible to install a removable 5th wheel in the trunk of a Neon?

Just got my truck back today.

And the axle has been repaired! NO Noise !

The dealer replace ring and pinion and all seals and bearing in the rear axle.

I did not realize how loud it had gotten until I drove it and heard nothing!!

This fixed mine, I can email the repair order if you need it to take to your dealer.

However, the reflash of my computer for the high idle did not take,

The tech tried several times but it still did not work.

Who has had theirs done, and where, I would like to have mine done.
