They'll want to put in a reman unit for @$3000. 00 but it will have a nationwide warranty.



If you have a lot of miles on your transmission that may not be too bad of an option.



While having issues with my NV4500 (with only 15-20k since rebuild) far from home I learned it's almost imposible to find a Transmission shop that can actually repair a transmission.

They built a transmission for me on a 96 Ford T-Bird in 2000 and I gave the vehicle to my daughter who is still driving the vehicle with a boatload of miles and NO more problems, it came from the factory with a bad valve body and Ford had repaired the transmission four times with negative results. They did a great job for me in building a Ford Transmission. I felt they did great work for a pretty fair price.

I would bite the bullet and get it fixed there.

If it lets go on the road, it will probably do more damage, and then you'll be stranded looking at possibly a big tow bill.

No matter what trans shop does the job the builder is the one that will inspect the pieces and decide if the part being inspected is useable or not. It is the luck of the draw at a chain like AAmco.

I found a transmission shop in Manchester, TN. Many praises to Banner Automotive. They were quick with repairs.



Now that all is finallly fixed, the source of the problem and noise: One of the internal bearings failed. After that the the gears on the input shaft and the cluster gear were torn up. After both of those being replaced, new seals, syncros... , plus labor; ouch!! And a new SBC clutch and needle bearing.



The transmission shop said the transmission was low on oil, not empty but still low. A lot can be said for checking fluids regularly.

"Over half of the transmissions that come into our shop don't need to be replaced (but we do it anyway)". I refer to these folks as scAMMCO. Very large national chain, very bad record overall. I wouldn't take a lawn mower to them for service.
