I have a 1991 ctd non intercooled engine with 90,000 mi. that I want to put in a 1997 ck-3500 this engine is in excellent condition, what are the pro's & con's for this engine? thank's John

I have a 89 w/500k on it. I can honestly say that 95% of the problems w/it have ended up being my fault, other than a 426 hemi there has never been a better for the purpose engine put in a mopar. It doesnt' have a gimmacky nickname like it's competition, it doesn't need one it's a cummins diesel. There are people on this site who have forgotten more than I know about 5. 9's but they feel the same way, There is nothing that your chevy can do that the cummins won't make it do it better.

i've been debating the same thing and so far what i've learned is to use the trans. that comes with the newer engine(if avail) since it comes with a lockup torque conv. and the linkage for everything will be the same, also there's a diff. btwn the tps on the 1st gens and whatever the 2nd's have so some modification is required but i don't know what. Haven't heard of too many other differences, i know it's been done in nascar marks truck by way of pdr and it looks like a real killer. Anybody else??

The pro's are its a Cummins. Nuff said.

The con's are all in the transplant reciever. The suspension and frame is going to be border line for handling the Cummins. The transmission is also a weak link unless you spend some time and $$ on it. If it is an auto the only one that stands a chance is the 4L80E and it will take some mods to bring it up to par. Not sure what GM used for a manual in the 3500 series but the version of the NV4500 they used was not the same as the one behind the Cummins.

To fully exploit the Cummins you will need an intercooler and that will take some fabbing and work. You have different options between 2x4 and 4x4 trucks also and that may dictate how you do some things.

Also, not sure how integrated the engine/drive train computers were in that year of truck but you may run into issues making things work correctly.

Great conversion and all that I have heard from are extremely happy.

Thank's for the replies, have some more thing's to workout before I get started, but I believe this will make my chevy 3500 a better machine.
