I live in western Pa and it gets cold here in the winter. With all of the discussion about ULSD I was wondering if it is still a good idea to add Kerosene for the winter. If so how much does everyone add for 35 gallons? Thanks Pete

The new ULSD has less lubrication value than regular 500ppm sulfur diesel, so I just use a fuel additive, which also has an anti gel built in. The white bottle power service available from advance auto, etc is pretty good stuff as long as it says it has an antigel added. You dont really need an antigel until about 10 F, unless you have water in your tank.

The bottle will give you the mix info .
Most stations if they only have one diesel avalable have a mix [ #2 & #1-kerosene ]
Ask who you get fuel from what the mix is , they do not know then get it from a source that does know what there selling .
What I like to do is get only #2 and add Powerservice , the best of both , #2 keeps my millage up [ 1 1/2 - 2 mpgs ] and the Powerservice white bottle keeps the gell and lube in check , then in warm weather the gray bottle , and if it gells the red bottle is spouse to work through a gelled system .

I usually fill up at BP stations in the Pittsburgh Area. The cashiers never know the answers to the ?'s I ask. Anyone know what BP usually does for winter diesel?

If youre buying your fuel in Pgh, I'm sure it's winterised.

As far as how much... . who knows.

Beware if you add kero. Some is red dyed. I can get clear just about everywhere around me, but you'll want to test it first.

Talked to the BP truck driver filling the tanks last night. No winter blend of diesel fuel yet for BP. He said he wasn't sure when and the only gas station that may have some would be Sunoco and that was maybe.

Pete,

Like patriot said, make sure it isn't dyed red. I know of another guy that just got a fine for running red fuel in southwestern PA. Rt. 66 is a BAD road if you run red fuel!

That makes 3 that I have heard of in the last 6 months.

I decided to add the power service in the white bottle from walmart. The Bp driver said that the oil companies haven't started making ultra low sulfur kerosene yet son adding kerosene wouldn't help.

Been buyin' diesel in western PA for 5 years now. I have never run into a batch which didn't perform proper in winter; buy a name brand from a busy station and fuggedabaddit. That said, I always add Stanadyne.

That BP driver you talked to didn't know what he was talking about...

1. kero wouldn't have to be ULS to help

2. he wouldn't know the difference if it was winter mix, the driver doesn't have to do anything different

Look for a KwikFill or a CountryFair with diesel in your area, some will have ULSD, some will have ULSD in what they call All Weather Supreme. All diesel at all KwikFill or CountryFair stations is a winter blend as of Nov. 1, whether it's ULSD or ULSD-AWS.

My reasoning for using KwikFill and Country Fair is that they are both owned by United Refining Co. in Warren, PA. URC is completely American-owned, and uses 100% North American oil. No other refining company in the world can say that!

Cool... nice area! I grew up in Sheffield, and we always used to canoe down the Tionesta through Kellettville to the Dam. That creek is a very special place for me.

Last night, I got to thinking... he may have been referring to DieselGuard, and additive package that most BP stations add to the fuel when it's unloaded at the station. I have no experience with this package at all.

pete i use the power service stuff for two yrs now with no problems and i always fill up at bp by cen iii mall never had any problems :D
