my 2001 ram is pretty nasty under the hood (breather vent, oil change spillage and brake fluid to name a few). I want to clean it up and address the breather bottle and try to keep it clean.

my question is- in addition to the stock gizmos i have a afe open element air filter and an edge ez under the hood as well as sensors and an isolator for the fuel pressure.

do i need to cover anything other than the air filter.

right now i have a dirty engine that runs good, i don't want to end up with a clean engine that won't run.

any cleaners you suggest or better yet suggest I avoid??

thanks in advance.

Other than covering the air filter, I use a chemical very similar to Simple Green (just a little stronger made my a commercial chemical company named Alfer). I just spray it on full strength, let it sit for about 10 min, and rinse off with hot water. For stubborn dirt, a little elbow grease will not hurt.

I have never had a problem with Simple Green (of this product Green Stuff) and sensors. I have had problems with Purple Power (found at Advanced Auto Parts) and damage to sensors.

I like to spray some WD 40 or equivlent on engine and surrounding areas after I'm done, the cleaners are often corrosive and leave their mark.

Use the green the don't use pressure just garden hose with hot water , the hot helps to wash but best of all it drys fast so to cause less problums for electrical and other stuff.

The only issue I had when I cleaned my engine compartment was the "Water in Fuel" light came on. Just had to blow dry the connection w/compressed air.

I have a steamer that really cuts the grime well. I use that after I pray it down with simple green and rinse off. It really shines things up nicely.
