I was wanting to buy a barring tool and timing kit. I found a cheap maintanence kit cummins part #3399869 that includes a barring tool among other various wrenches and things. I also found an injector adjustment kit part #3823610. It doesn't elaborate a whole lot on the specifics. It does include a dial indicator, would this be all I need for doing the timing? anybody bought any of these kits or know a better kit I could buy that would give me what I need?

Is the pump gear puller included? If so, with the lift chart, you may be in business.

No puller with it, will any generic gear puller work?

This Craftsman puller works good. Well it did on my 1st gen 12V. It's compact and probly would work on your newer 12V. http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=TOOL&pid=00941833000

The barring adaptor/tool runs ~$35. If you have any basic tools of decent quality you won't use any of the KD tools in the Cummins kit. Might be good for out on the road use though.

Not sure if the p-pump uses the same pump wrench to access the hidden 13mm nuts used to mount the pump to the gear housing. If so, snap-on # SP-144 is the handy 'bent' wrench runs $28, well worth it. http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...d=1288&supersede=&store=snapon-store&tool=all

I don't know anything about the timing kit. Bought and sold the maintainence kit.

CEdwards,

I bought the Snap-on kit and it did not have a barring tool in it. Also found out after the fact that the kit from the local Dodge dealer was cheaper by $20 and had everything needed. Set my timing at 15. 5 and it woke up nicely.

Regards, John

You don't loosen the pump for adjustment on the p pump. Change is made by reclocking the gear to shaft.
