I recieved a quote from Dave Smith Motors and have a question about some of the charges. What the H... . is this $420 market adjustment charge. Should I be willing to pay it??

I also want some opinions on thier $217 dealer markup price. It is $49 over invoice PLUS $168 for them to clean/prep the truck and "glaze coat" it. Seems like an expensive wax job to me, but I'm told this is a mandatory charge. I thougt I read somewhere on the internet the dealers cost to "prep" the vehicle is included in the price the factory pays the dealer for selling a truck. Am I wrong here, should I agree to pay $168 for a wash and wax job??

Lastly what is a $69 document fee about???

Just want to make sure the dealer is not attempting to make some extra $$$ at my expense.

I didn't pay for any of that crap. I don't remember about the document fee - they might have you on that one. Check Edmunds.com - I think they address all of these issues pretty well. Some other guys will probably chime in with answers too.

Go to Milton Sales.com, dealer out of Okla. They will give you a quote over the internet. Just plug in your truck information and get the quote and take it to your dealer. They also spell out all of their charges. Good luck.

If you ask about the document fee, it's probably their fee to have the "Lot Jockey" take all the paperwork down to the local Motor vehicle office and get your tags.

Most only do this once or twice a month, that's why YOU get to drive around for a month on Temporary (paper) tags.

Run the truck on www.carsdirect.com and don't pay more than that amount. Let them know that you have priced the truck on internet sites and what you are willing to pay, DO NOT DEAL WITH ANYONE ON THE LOT or JUST INSIDE THE FRONT DOOR. Those guys are for the suckers. Get to the internet sales guy or fleet sales guy in the back. SNOKING

Tell them to shove the market adjustment charge as well as the $168 wax job..... my dealer told me the same thing and I said I wasn't paying it. I didn't want them waxing my truck especially for the prices they charge.

I would pay them invoice + the $49 over invoice. If they say no go find another dealer. I ended up getting my truck right at invoice + I got another $500 for the farm bureau rebate:).

These guys will tag on anything they can for fees. The only fees you should see are for any tag/registration that the state requires, and then it should be in line with anywhere else that you can register the truck in your state.

don't pay

The 168. 00 or the 217. 00 it's all BS. I would call Bill Rudd at Chaprell Dodge 1-800-880-2427. Get a price and use it as a guide line. I purchased mine from Chaprell and got a good deal. Added mark up is just that added mark up. Just a sales managers whim. Prep charges are paid by DC. Fabric gaurd, paint sealant, fuel treatments ect are all BS and a total rip off. Shop til you drop then use your instincts and go for it. In the Las Vegas area they want in the area of $500. 00 for doc fees and up to 3 grand dealer markup. LOL beware!!!!

Thanks for the advise. The guy I talked to at Dave Smith is in internet sales. I was not sure if the $420 marketing adjustment fee was legitimate, guess it's another way for a dealer to try and make a few extra bucks. I always heard Dave Smith charged $49 over dealer invoice, period. Then later I find out it is $49 over invoice PLUS a "small" fee of $168 (I believe is what I was told) for them to clean and glaze prep the truck, which I thought the factory paid them to do anyway. Again another ploy to soak the customer for some more $.

Still not sure what that $69 document fee is. Can it be the same thing as Melton Sales $49 processing fee?? But I think I remember Dave Smith Motors telling me a few years back when I almost bought a truck the $49 over invoice was to cover processing fees and paper work. Looks like all the advertising hype from various dealers of "Rock bottom" and "No haggle" pricing is not what they lead you to believe. It dosen't seem any better than the "old" way of throwing out offers and counter offers.

I got an internet quote from Melton Sales, but it dosen't mention any fees or "extra" charges. I will call them Monday and see if they too have any hidden charges besides the $49 processing fee. If they truely only charge a $49 processing fee and nothing more I may call Dave Smith and tell them I'm only willing to pay what Melton charges: Dealer Invoice, tax & registration, destination charge and a $49 processing fee and if they don't like it then they lost a customer and I will let everyone know why I choose Melton Sales over Dave Smith. Does this sound like a fair offer??

1tuffram,

Go to Edmunds.com and read everything relevant to buying a new vehicle you can find there. A very good site.

Beware of X dollars "over invoice". The amount they pay is not "invoice". Edmunds will set you straight as to what they really pay. As I remember, if they make 6 or 8% percent over what they pay, they consider it a good sale (according to Edmunds).

I've used their advise on 2 or 3 purchases and, in general, it's worked. The only kicker that works against you is if the vehicle is in high demand and they can get whatever they ask for it. But these trucks are very common, all in all. Don't hesitate to try Autobytel.com and any other respectable internet sales channels.

One other thing. I've also heard that buying in Canada can save you a bundle and you can buy US-ready vehicles there. I've never checked into it myself, thought.

Good luck, and don't be afraid to walk out the door if they don't meet your price. You'd be surprised how many call you back.

Another fee that must be paid is the regional advertising fee. This fee is charged by the manuf. and varies from one district to the next. That may be what they are calling the marketing fee. The dealer will make the 3 % back-end bonus they call hold back. I have never seen a dealer that would dip into their hold back. The documentation fee, prep fee and other fee fees are going to cover overhead/their butt.

Make sure you take service after the sale into account. I would hate to save $250. 00 on a $35,000. 00 purchase and not be able to get timely service. Dealers do not have to service cars that another dealer sold or for that matter cars they sell. Any dealer that will not service their own cars will not be around long, however they can find a lot of reasons why they can not get your car in today or tommorow or the day after that.

The online dealer in Bartlsville, OK. puts the DC factory invoice online and it shows on the invoice the 3% hold back DC that DC pays the dealer. It is at the bottom as HB xxxxx

It does not include any rebates that are in effect but are deducted from the invoice for sale price.

How does the tax work when you buy a new truck from out of state? If I buy a truck from OK would I have to pay sales tax in OK and OH when I bring the truck up here? I love the prices of Melton but I ain't going to pay tax twice:mad:

you shouldn't pay more than the $49 over

Everything else, including holdback, prep fees, finance charges and advertising fees are included in the "invoice" price. Maybe the $69 doc fees, depending on what Idaho charges the dealer to record the sale and get temp plates etc. That's it. If you're willing to travel this far, my dealer does $54 over invoice and, I think, that $54 is the doc fees, but I could be wrong on that one.

As for sales tax, that will vary from state to state. Generally, if you pay tax in one state, but register in another, they will figure out how much tax you would have owed the registering state, subtract what you paid the state where you bought the vehicle and hit you for the difference. No, they won't refund the difference if it turns out to be in your favor... .

Fortunately, as a NH resident (military, stationed in WA, but a NH resident :D ), I don't have to deal with sales tax!!

Tax in Okla.

I bought my truck in Ada OK from Chaprell. I didn't pay any state tax had to pay when I got to Nevada DMV and it hurt!!! The purchase from Chaprell was a good experience I saved at least 3000. 00 from the best deal I was offered in Vegas. I also had a good break in drive back to home. Chaprell picked me up at the airport in OK City drove me to the dealership. It was no more than a half hour and I was on the road home. :D :D :D

? ABLE TO ORDER 2500 OR 3500

I talked to Melton Sales yesterday about ordering a truck. I was told the factory cut production back to 10% in January or Feburary for the tooling of the lines for the new body style. I was told it is basically IMPOSSIBLE to place an order and get delivery now, and Melton is no longer taking orders for 2500 or 3500 RAMS. I have been frantically trying to verify this thru Dave Smith and a local dealer, but no one has returned my calls yet. I hope this is all rumor cause I was planning on placing an order by the end of this month.

CAN ANYONE VERIFY IF DC IS STILL ACCEPTING ORDERS FOR NEW TRUCKS, OR IS IT TOO LATE TO GET ONE FROM THE FACTORY???

Call chandler dodge in chandler,OK. They sell more CTDs than anyone else in the state. They can get what you want or close enough. They may even have it on the lot.
