I have SS nerf bars on my truck and recently when my driver door rusted out the nerf bar became rust stained where the water/rust would run out of the door.

I have since fixed or atleast slowed the rusting of the door and would like to remove the staining from the nerf bar. What kind of product/process would do this with out screwing up the bar?

Any suggestions are appreciated,

Thanks

is there any kind of coating on the bars or is it just raw stainless tube? if it is raw, some wd40 and stainless steel wool would work good. if there is some coating on them, the steel wool [stainless] would work too but it might rub through it

not sure about the coating, anything I try I am gonna do in a inconspicuous spot first in case there is. If I had to guess I would say there is not a coating, thinking that if there was I could just rub the rust stain off with a rag (which I tried and it did not work).

Anyone think that CLR (Calcium, Lime Rust remover product) would work?

Thanks

i use BKF (bar keepers friend) it work really well on all types of metal surfaces.

it took the rust off my center caps after a winter storm.

CLR and the finest "grit" scotch brite pad took it right off and did not marr up the finish. thanks for the info guys

Go to a marine store and get some of stainless cleaner boat owners use. This is a commoningly dealt with problem especially for those of us who boat on salt water.

I second Bar Keepers Friend.

I've used it for years to take rust off steel wheels and many other things. It works fast, works well, and won't scratch. You can even use it as a scouring powder in the kitchen.

Good luck.

Walmart has a liquid that in a brown bottle that looks kinda like a flask. It is a rust remover made by Wink. It works really well w/ no abrasives.

Sounds like you got it cleaned up! Some thoughts about cleaning stainless steel. NEVER use any cleaner that has Chlorine as an ingredient. Use Stainless Steel Wool wherever possible. If you use scotchbrite, use new pads. GregH
