after about 3 or 4 minutes of regular driving my abs and brake light come on. On next startup they go away. Then back on again. I'll start checking tomorrow. Brakes feel good and firm and just did all new pads and rotors last fall. Does this sound like a faulty abs sensor? thanks:)

Yep, a bad sensor. Mine was the one on the rear axle. If you have 4 wheel ABS the front sensors could do it also... Before you remove the rear sensor, check the electrical plug at the sensor and make sure the contacts are not dirty, wet, or corroded. Could be a cheap fix.

I have been hunting around on my '99 for a while now to get that issue fixed, thought I had a faulty sensor on the rear diff, replaced it, didnt help, went for another cheap item and replaced the brake switch (the one that contacts the brake pedal) since it had hung on once or twice, now I am down to front wheel sensors. Last time I checked the fronts were around $170 each, so if anyone has suggestions on how to determine if one of them is faulty it would be appreciated. Brake & ABS comes on every time, usually only once rolling, but sometimes it comes on before I even get her in gear. Gave up for a while and pulled the fuse for winter (didnt find ABS on snow and ice very usefull ;) ) but back to hunt and replace now.

ya know it's funny. . I replaced ball joints and rotors and pads and don't recall where the sensors are?? Maybe I'll to checkin it tonight. . is there a way to check the sensors? thanks:)

I am not sure if this could be the answer, however on my wifes Sebring we would get the abs light and a chime. The cause was low brake fluid level, caused by worn pads.

The front sensors are in the wheel bearing assembly (hub bearing). If your truck has no wire running to the front hub bearings, you only have rear ABS. You should be able to jack the front end enough to remove weight from the front wheel and roll the tire, lift with a pry bar, ect. looking for slop in the bearing. There should be no noticeable slop in the bearings.

I just had this problem pop up last night, only difference is that the ABS and BRAKE light are on constantly.

I was about to ask the question then saw this thread... I certainly hope it's just a bad sensor. I'll be checking tonite.

Thanks guys.

You should really use the search function as this has been discussed many times before with checking sensors, causes etc. I know I have responded to this issue so many times I am tired of repeating myself as others that know this info are probably tired of the repeats also. No offense but it is like telling the kids to pick up thier mess all the time.

Maybe this would be the right place to share a brake story with those of you who have disc brakes in the front only and drum on the rear. Ever since I saw the EGR ad for converting drum to disc I have wanted to do it. On a recent trip from FL to OH I ask my brother in law Mechanic in OH if he would do it for me. I took with me what I was led to believe were the correct brackets which turned out to be WRONG. We then ordered the EGR Kit which contains everything needed. Every thing fit together perfectly. The people at EGR know what they are doing. They gladly answer questions and are undoubtedly experts in their business. They could not have been nicer and invited us to call back. You might get an answering machine but they do call back in just a few minutes. The price was more than I wanted to pay but the results were worth every penny. The difference in the stopping distance is amazing. Better than expected. If it saves one fender bender it was well worth twice the price. I recently had a fender bender with an old Nissan with drum brakes on the rear. Police Cited the other Driver but if I would have had disc on the rear the accident may not have happened or would would have been much less of an impact. For 17 days I felt like I had cracked ribs where the seat belt did its job. Being retired upgrading to a Ram with disc on all 4 would have been too great of an expense. My 98 will outlast me so the conversion made sense, at least to me. -- email address removed --

ok all,

still trying to sort through all the posts on this. . here's an update: replaced all the damn sensors and cleared codes and still have the same problem. . guessing on the computer or whatever controls all this?? I'd like to pin this down before snow removal season is here. Also for what its worth, I checked the wheel bearings and no play
