Mines been doing this for the last 40k miles, I THINK it is one of the sensors on the front wheels, seeing as how I cleaned the VSS and the speedo has never acted up. seems to come on when I hit a bump in the road, brakes work normal... . 151k on the originals and still look great, pretty good seeing as how this thing hauls heavy 90% of the time!
Need to hook a DRB to it. If the light is ON the issue should be not that hard for a decent tech to find. Had that and suspisiion warning light on Caddys a lot. The techs I had usually found it the issue pretty quick.
I have had this same thing happen 3 or 4 times over 36k miles. No other problems or codes. Dealer could not find anything... . It always clears up by itself within a few start cycles.
This is real easy to check out if it is just a bad sensor. There are two sensors in the front(follow the wires from out by the hub, up into the wheel well just infront of the fire-wall that conector is the one to unplug) and one in the rear(on the driverside top of the rear diff). Unplug all but one and see if the speedo works. Rotate which sensor is plugged in until the speedo doesn't work(the speedo will work from only one of the three sensors being plugged in). When the speedo doesn't work you have found the faulty sensor. If all sensors work, then it will be another problem. This method will work as I tried it personally when diagnosing my truck for the same annoying ABS/Brake light. I don't trust dealers to work on anything of mine, so I just learn to fix it myself. The trans does not have a VSS that does anything for the speedo, trust me I checked. Mine ended up being the rear VSS. Dodge parts department item, should be 30. 00-40. 00 can't remember, but I do know it is made in USA Oo. (I asked if it was or the box) :-laf funny and sad at the same time... Jason
i had that problem on an 06 model and my abs module was fried changed it and cured the problem was running a tst box at that time but they said there product could not have done it so i dont know
I had the same thing happen and it turned out to be the wiring going to the front left speed sensor. Mine would work if it was raining or I just have washed the truck for a moment.
Thanks for the pointer, I will try the sensor test. I hate taking mine to the dealer too, ours is a little over an hour away. Mine has not been to the dealer yet and want to keep it that way.
Edit: Wife just got home and said the light went out on her way home
I was driving home last week and I heard a chime. I look at the dash and the ABS and Brake light were lit up. I drove for a few days with it on and it never cleared itself. Got it to a dealer and they replaced the ABS module (Recall under warranty) and the lights still remained on. They tested the wheel sensors and one of them was faulty so I have one on order and they should have it replaced by tuesday next week. They are 100% sure that's the problem.
Sorry to hijack this thread but... .
While I had my truck in at the dealer I had them complete a 4x4 service (change diff and t-case oils). However, now my 4x4 (electric) won't engage! The 4X4 light just flashes when switched to 4hi or 4lo at a stop or while moving. It engaged prior to taking it to the dealer. I took it back and they checked the fluid level and connections but couldn't find anything wrong. Now I have to make another appointment (ARGH)! Do you think that this has anything to do with the wheel sensors/ABS module or is this a seperate issue on it's own?
Any help is greatly appreciated. If it's just a fuse or something, I will fix it my self. Thanks.
This is related to the abs speed sensor , it will not change into 4x4 if the computer cannot read the speed of the vehicle ,does your speedo still work?
Yes the spedometer still works. I started the truck this morning and tried to put it in 4x4 and it worked! Started driving to the dealer (since I already had an appointment), tried to engage 4x4 while driving (<30mph) and it would not engage. It will only engage when standing still. Weird, since it would not engage at all yesterday whether it was standing still or in motion. I suppose I'll just have to wait until my wheel speed sensor is installed.
I had the same expereience recently, on a road trip with a light load on behind. Turns out I had a RF wheel bearing on its way out. It got hot enough to burn up the ABS sensor. The bearing didn't start making any noise for another 75 or 80 miles of highway driving. If you're going to raise the truck to look at the ABS sensors and connections, check the bearings out while it's up.
