ABS Code

My ABS and brake lights have been on for the last few weeks. Brakes seem to work fine. I have replaced the rear wheel speed sensor, checked all vac. lines, fuses, and unhooked batteries for the night to reset. The next morning after driving about 40 ft. they are back on. This all started after I replaced the drivers side battery. is there any way to read the codes without going to a dealer or buying one of those scan tools? Thanks.

Check your brake light fuse. If both, the brake and abs lights are on, it could be a blown brake light fuse. I learned the hard way, got hit in the rear. Thank goodness for that drop hitch. A few days later, I took the old goat in to find out why the lights were on. Ended up paying $45 minimum for a replaced $. 50 fuse.

Mine's doing the same thing, just started this morning and went off after about 10 minutes of driving and after about an hour it they came back on again and wont go off. I'm going to check the fuse before I leave for work and if that doesn't work I guess I'll head to the dealer.

On the 94-97 trucks (and possibly newer trucks too) you can read the codes. There a key sequence, on-off-on-off-on (without cranking the truck) within 5 seconds, and the service engine soon light will blink the code number.

Although this page is discussing a gas truck, it still works for the diesels.
