2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission abs engageing at low speed???

Replaced the sensor for the abs in my Dana 80. It hasn't been hooked up since I swapped My Dana 70 for a Dana 80 about 6 mounths ago. The senor had a different shaped connector. Now that its changed out all the dummy lights are off in the dash. Trouble is I can feel the abs engaging at low speed stops on dry pavement? What gives????? Do I have an adjustment problem with the rear drums? This did not happen at all until I installed this brand new, out of the box from Mopar sensor. Im open for any ideas here. I did a search and came up with nothing on this issue.

Hey Jabird, did you fix your problem? Mine is doing the same thing right now.



I just did my ball joints & tie rods. I replaced one hub and it came with a new ABS sensor bolted on. I took the sensor out of the other side and put it back in when I reinstalled the hub. The ABS light & brake light stayed on when I first dorve it, but the brakes felt fine. The lights turned off on the way home from work, but now the ABS activates at very low speeds on dry pavement. Its kind of scarry when I'm standing on the brakes and its moving closer to the car stopped at the light in front of me.

Now we are getting somewhere!!!!!!!!!!!!!I did my front hubs at the same time I did alot of other things... . they ohm out correctly, so being that the sensors where brand new I "assumed" they couldnt be the trbl. I have been trying everything under the sun with no luck... ... ... ANY IDEAS... ... ... . ANYBODY!!!!!!!!!!

The tone ring for a front hub isnt side sensitive is it. What i mean is the direction it spins sends a certain signal to the ABS computer? Where if you put the right hub on the left side and the left hub on the right side, it would bolt up to the axle assembly fine, but spin the wrong direction and send a faulty signal to the ABS..... Like I said, I've tried alot of things here am now I'm really reaching for ideas

Hey Jabird, I fixed my problem. I replaced the old sensor. When I took that sensor out, it had a lot of crap on the end. It looked like grease and maybe some metal shavings. I thought about just cleaning it and putting it back in, but since I had a new one already, I swapped it. Its stopping like it should now.

The sensors don't know what direction the tone wheel is going, so which side it's on shouldn't matter. If you replaced the tone wheel or sensor are all the parts from the same model year? If one tone ring has a different number of teeth on it you might see ABS activations. Same thing for the rear axle, especially if it the connectors are different as you mentioned. Not sure that's your problem, but something to look at. Good luck.

Front's are new,1998,2500, hubs and sensors from napa. The rear is a 1996 Dana 80 out of a 3500. Are you saying that I might have everything functioning properly, but with the 1996 tone ring in the rear, it has the wrong number of teeth to be talking to my 1998,4 wheel, ABS computer. If so I will go to the "*******" in the morning and see if there are different part numbers for a 1998 and a 1996 rear tone ring.

I don't know enough detail from '96 to '98 to say that they are different, but it is a possibility. Also, did the rear axle come out of a 4 wheel ABS truck that was similar to yours? If there is only one sensor on the axle you installed and the ABS computer is looking for two sensors I'm sure that would give you trouble too. Post your findings...

I'm almost 99% sure theres only one sensor on the rear axle no matter if it's a 4 wheel ABS or a 2 wheel ABS. That being said, I just assumed the rear tone ring was the same no matter what. I looked on TELAFLY Dodge's web site last night and there are three different tone rings that could be ordered for a Dana 80????? It really wasnt very clear and didnt give any part numbers. If anybody reading this knows for sure if theres a difference in the teeth count dependant on what year truck your useing let me know. Or if theres a difference in the ABS computer for a 3500 and a 2500. without have the parts sitting in front of me I'm not sure but, would a 1998 Dana 70 tone ring bolt on to a 1996 Dana 80 carrier? The truck started out as a 2500 and still has 2500 hubs and sensors in the front so maybe i need to get a 2500 tone ring back into the rear end... . Any thoughts??????????
