driving home last week with the cruise control set @65, it disengaged and the red "brake" and amber "ABS" lights came on. the lights cycled on and off twice within 15 minutes and have been on since. i've read a few threads about the rearwheel sensor for the ABS failing. can anyone tell me how to check the sensor to see if it's failed? are there any other thing to check or ways to reset the ABS? thanks for the help!:) :) :)

I think you already tested the system!!! When the items you had fail, it's more than likely the sensor. You can pull the sensor and clean it and re-install it. Everything should work. Or if warranty still in effect, let dealer do it.

is the rear wheel speed sensor also the signal for the speedometer? my speedo still works, it's the ABS thats dead. does anyone know the resistance value for the sensor pins? thanks for the help!:D :D :D

CDRAKE, i can not remember off my head, because i just had to replace mine 2 weeks ago. Just check across the two terminals to check for resistance. Mine was open. The proper way to check for codes,is to ground pin#13 on your OBD11 plug with the ignition in the run posistion and count the total number of times the abs light flashes. That will be the code#. Good luck. Let us know how you make out.

Where is the sensor located? The same thing happened to me today, brake and ABS light both came on, the truck set for a little while and they stayed off for about a mile, then came back on.

ABS sensor is in the top of the rear end on 96-97 trucks. 1 bolt and it pulls out, wipe off the gunk and stick it back in, it didnt fix mine but the dealer spent 8 hours and didnt fix it either so I gave up.

:D ABS is fixed! went to the dealer yesterday and got a new rear wheel speed sensor p/n 56028187-AD for $33. 82, they had several in stock. measured the resistance between pins on the new one @1800 ohms, my old one rang open. installation took about one hour, removing the spare tire makes it alot easier to work on. the factory sensor is in there pretty tight, it took some careful twisting and turning to get it out. i used some brake cleaner and compressed air to clean around it before it came out, a little grease on the new o-ring and the new sensor went in. btw i removed the ABS fuse before i started working on this, reconnected the wire harness, reinstalled the fuse, crossed my fingers and started it up. FIXED!!!!:D :D :D

thanks for everyones help-chris
