2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission ABS light comes on at 42 mph

The ABS light comes on when I get to 40 mph. I do not know anything about the ABS system on how to trouble shoot the problem.



1999 2500, 2-whl drive, 318 hp lots of power. DDT trouque converter w/lockup. Marine injectors and the Edge. Mileage 19=20 on the road and 10-13 towing a 33' 5th wheel. I also went to a 3: exhaust and the EGT's really came down.

Sounds like a speed sensor MB. It's located in the rear axel (I believe). Had one go out on my 99 as well.

You'll need a scanner to find out for certain.

I have the same problem. I have alraedy replaced the speed sensor but it did not fix the problem.

I had this problem happen on my 1/2 ton... . NOT GOOD! I thought it was the sensor as well, swapped it but it still happed. Turned out to be the Limited-Slip clutches blew apart and lodged between the casing of the diff. and the tone ring, this then ground down the tone ring teeth and also broke a few off. I sure hope that is not your problem but you might want to pull the diff cover and tae a look. Also, if you have front abs, it could be a worn hub bearing, when they get bad, the tone ring in the hub looses its clearance between the ring and sensor and wears off the end of the sensor... dont ask me how I know that...



Also, check for codes!

Anybody come up with anything new on this yet?. Last time the rear sensor went bad I had no speedo till 20 mph and ABS and red brake warning light on. Now at about 45mph I have the ABS and red brake light. Speedo and everything else works fine, no indication of any problems. Checked the speed sensor in the trans and found it open. Bought a new one 670 ohms. Installed and no difference. I know going through the wiring diagrams that the trans. sensor is in the equation but not sure of it's real purpose. Guess I will start checking wires unless someone has some other ideas.

Could be the "brake light switch" on the steering column. I had the same problem and chased it to that switch. Paid about $15 for it at the local dealer. Keep in mind that it is a one time setting. Follow the instructions and there should be no problem.

Found It!!!!!

After running out of ideas I unplugged the trailer brake controller. Presto, no lights. Removed plugs in back of drivers wheel well by the body cushion support and cleaned/dielectric greased. Removed plug at trailer plug at bumper, plugged trailer brake controller in and went for a ride. No lights and cruise control works again. Disassembled trailer plug, cleaned and more dielectric grease, put everything back together, went for a ride and everything is well again.
