A few weeks ago, my ABS light came on. I did not think too much about it until I tried to stop on a Icy street, and the ABS did not work. A few days later, the ABS light went out, and my ABS worked again. The light has since came back on and has stayed on since, and my ABS does not work. What could be the problem? Could it be a computer problem? Or could a sensor on the wheeles be frozen? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
 
randy hello . i have a 2wd. 98. 5, and have had this problem. first check the wires running back to the sensor . it mounted on the top of the diff. left hand side. unplug check for corrosion. someone will chime in with the ohm reading. my problem was wires chafed thru where dc clamped it to the stabilizer on the left side . there is a revized sensor and bracket, it rotates it 90 degrees from the original position. hope this helps.
 
Randy, I agree with fourbar in checking the rear sensor. If the wireing looks good, remove the sensor and ck for crud on it. They also crap out. If you have 4 wheel ABS, ck the front pickups for cut wires and pull the plugs out and re connect them. If the plug prongs look cruddy, clean them and put some diaelectric grease on them.

I had a Chevy that had the ABS light come on and I just pulled and re connected the sensor cables and it cleared the light.
 
If I play in the deep snow alot I can cause the light to stay on. Mud will do the same. I would make sure the tone rings and sensors are clean.
 
I tried the fixes mentioned, and it still does not work. Is there another connector in the engine compartment I can check? How do I check the sensors? I do not want to take it in to the dealer. Thanks

ABS thing happened to me too on my 2002 2500HD 4x4. I was playing with 5 foot snow drifts and the ABS light and BRAKE lights came on. Once the weather warmed up and things melted a bit, the lights turned off and all was good. Weird. Yes, the drifts were over my hood. :)
 
i had a similar prob on my 96. Cold weather would light the ABS light till the engine warmed up. Replaced a vacuum switch in the engine compartment. Works fine now.
 
My ABS light problem was caused by water in a connector behind the left front wheel, between the splash guard and the cab. Mine has two connectors and one of them has a wire that goes to the brake controller on one end and the 7 pin connector at the other. If I disconnected the brake controller the light would go off. I found it by tracing everybrake wire in the system using the wire diagrams in the repair manual. Good Luck
 
I had my Brake & ABS Light stay on & my ABS stop working - it ended up being one of the front sensors. New sensor = no lights & working ABS (which I think I like w/out now) - oh well, I'll wait 'till it craps out again & remove the light next time :D
 
Mine just came on today on the way home. Checked to see if they still worked and they don't. How did you check the sensor? And are they expensive?

I replaced the sensor on the rear of mine about 6 months ago. took about 30-45 minutes and if i remember correctly it was $30-$40 for the sensor through my local dealer.
 
yup - or you can just have the dealer drop one in for a couple of bucks more - not a killer amount for the service. Forgot how much, but I'll check when I get back home. First time was a rear sensor that the dealer took care of for me. good luck
 
Well I replaced the rear sensor Friday afternoon and I still have the ABS, brake light and no ABS. Stopped by the dealer and got the ABS codes read. After clearing every thing we got a fresh code (65) ABS relay bad. Unfortunately it's in the ABS controller located on top of the pump and valve assem. and the only one they can find is in Detroit.
