my 97 3500 dually and i were in a recent accident. the front brakes locked up and rear did not. i believe my truck i supposd to have abs. is this normal?

Most of our trucks are rear ABS only. In theory, that should indicate your rear ABS is working correctly. If you have not done so, I would install the Chevy wheel cylinders and pin up or remove your proportioning valve (of equipped). This will give you more rear bite and save your front brakes. Good luck

Duellys already have a larger brake cylinder, no need to change it. Mine didn't have a propoertioning valve on the rear axle, so I have no experience there. LikeJMcCoy, I believe the ABS is working as designed unless you have front ABS also.

As GAmes pointed out, the 3500s do have larger wheel cylinders, but not as large as the Chevys. At around 10 dollars each, I believe it would be worth it.

I had a 94 and I thought it and all have 4 wheel ABS. On ice my 94 would not lock up the front.

Older trucks have a simple rear wheel ABS. When the rear locks then the brake pressure is released and ALL the brakes come off. If the front locks and the rear doesn't then it means the rears aren't working because they're not adjusted or seized or whatever.

i was contacted by insurance company and the body shop deemed my truck unrepairable. they didnt even pry open the hood. i am having another shop look at it for me. they will look under the hood. i really what to keep this 12v alive... having only put 8k miles on it in the year that i have had it i like the truck. it is a weekend and camper towing truck. if i can get my truck home i will look into the proportioning valve. less than a year a go i had the rear axel seal replaced and all new brakes put on it.

My 96 is RWAL (rear wheel antilock) but in 96 and maybe in 94 and 95 ABS(All wheel antilock brake system) was an option.

When my RWAL activates the front wheels lock and back wheels don't. When my RWAL valves weren't working all the wheels locked.

Your '97 has drum brakes on the rear. If you haven't adjusted the rear brakes from time to time you had no rear brakes and that could have contributed to your accident.

One of the often unspoken advantages of the 2001. 5 and newer trucks is four wheel disc brakes which require no adjustment.
