So, another questions about my new to me 1996 2500.

Both the brake warning light and the ABS light are on.

-How does the ABS work on this? I don't see any electrical sensors for ABS on the front wheels

-The rear axles has a center sensor at the diff, not sure if that is ABS or if that is speed sensor only

The rear sensor your looking at is the abs sensor for the rear. You do not have front abs sensors.

Check to make sure your rear brake lights are illuminating when you press the brake pedal... . If the fuse is blown, the overhead light in the back of the cab will illuminate, but not the tail or trailer brake lights..... and it will cause the lights to illuminate in the dash as you describe...

It can also be a loss of vacuum, as well as the ABS sensor in the rear axle... Borg Warner part number BWD ABS101... . :D

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I've got the same thing happening on my 02, or is my truck different than the OP's?. I have rear brake lights and have replaced the rear ABS sensor. The passenger front unit bearing is only a year old. The ABS and Brake light occasionally go off for a couple of seconds while driving, but come back on. Anyway to tell which side is bad on the front?

The sensors are a hall effect type and if you disconnect the wire going to the sensor and connect a meter you should be able to detect a small voltage jump when turning the wheel. bg

OK, back to my 96... .

I have just done a major service (I did the steering gear box, pitman arm, steering gear box reinforcement, steering damper, all four ball joints, both front wheel bearings, track bar, alignment, new pads and rotors, new shoes and drums, new brake fluid, four new shocks, Oil change, fuel filter change, valve adjustment, valve cover gaskets, sway bar end links, sway bar bushings, water pump, thermostat, upper and lower rad hoses, flushed cooling system, serp belt, belt tensioner, heater bypass hose, transmission fluid and filter, tightened the bands in the trans, changed the diff fluid, changed the T-Case fluid, new battery terminals, and replace the corroded ends on all the battery lines, replace the corded battery cross over line, and new alternator).

... And I did the rear axle ABS sensor. It rang open (so, it was bad), so I thought that was my ABS problem. Nope. ABS light and dash brake light still on.

What's next in the ABS system? I have heard it has a vacuum part?

The vacuum switch is located on the fender near the drivers side battery. I recommend you go to Genos web site and get a factory service manual (not a Haynes or Chiltons). It will be the best money you ever spent for a tool. The manual has the complete ABS troubleshooting procedure. I prefer the paper edition, but if you don't mind your laptop getting greasy, go with the CD.

I received the same ABS and BRAKE warning lights on my 98.5 truck. The speedometer would not indicat until I reached about 15 MPH. I checked the rear wheel speed sensor located on top of the rear axle and it check with an Ohm-meter as open across the two pins on the connector. Napa auto parts has a replacement but it has the mounting hole rotated 180 degrees with respect to the connector, so they also include a 4 inch pig tail connector extension lead. The new sensor showed about 2000 Ohms from pin-to-pin. The installation was easy and I used a few wire ties to keep the pig tail extension from moving around.

You responded to a post that is a year and a half old. As an FYI, '97s and earlier vehicle speed sensor is mounted on the trans (2WD) or the transfer case. If you read the entire post the OP replaced the ABS sensor in the differential and it didn't fix the problem.
