AC Compressor

Well my AC Compressor crapped out on me on the way home from work today ( AC in the middle of January, thats some BS aint it!!).



I was cruisin down the highway, aind i noticed it wasnt blowin cold, so i turned it up more. All of a sudden it started blowin smoke from the vents So i shut 'er down and pulled on over. The pulley was still turnin so i guess the bearings are ok. Can these compressors be rebuilt? What options do i have?

A/C compressor rebuilding takes some special tools, most just go down and buy a re-build and swap it out. Also the system will need to be flushed because of contamination from the disintegrating compressor. And some other parts will need to be changed, such as the filter-dryer.

compressor going bad shouldn't throw smoke out the vents. might have popped hole in evap core. mine did this last year. hook gages up and check pressures. no pressure = leak somewhere. high side and low side the same usually = bad compressor. check it out good before you spend money that doesnt fix it.

Well i got it off, and the bearings are shot. Im gettin it rebuilt, but i will check the evap core also
