AC condenser full of sand ?

Took my 2003 in for a re-charge of the AC this week, the guy said the condenser was packed with sand. How can I avoid that, other than not driving dirt roads, which isn't an option. Is it something I can clean myself periodically ?

I had the AC recharged a few years back, but that shop didn't say anything about the sand issue. Thanks for any help- Steve

You need to hit it with a water hose once in a while especially after driving on muddy or wet dirt road. bg
