well im sure that this has been talked about a few times... but what in the fart is that smell that comes out of the air conditioner if it (or the truck) has not been used in a few days? Man I tell ya, it makes me wanna get out and yak. I think maybe its some kinda terrorist (can I say that word?!?) plot to spread gas all over the good ol US of A.

Moisture in the vents.

Thats what I was told. All chrysler products seem to do it. At least the last 4 I have had. Read something about a fix once but seemed really costly. Best way is to run the last part of the trip with the air off and let it dry up.

Your odor is caused by moisture on the evaporator coil which mildews. All auto manufactures have this problem, not just DC. There is a product called DWDII,which is a foam type product that cleans the coils. It is easy to use and it seems to eliminate the odor. Living by the beach it is best to use outside air setting on the A/C whenever possible and check to see if the drain tube is clear.

On a truck that is as new as yours I would have the dealer fix it.

I had this same problem with my 97 Ram. The dealer said it was mildew and they used some spray in cleaner but that only lasted about a week. They ended up replacing all the internal components (evaporator core, evaporator case, heater core) which fixed the problem for about a month and then it came back.

After researching the difference in the core of the 97 and my 92 (which never has had the problem), I determined that on the 1st generation the core fins ran vertical and the condensation would all run down and out the drain. On the 2nd generation the fins run horizontal and the condensation is trapped unless the blower is on. This moisture staying on the fins mildews and causes the odor. There is really nothing to do that will get rid of it for good. The only thing that will fix it is for DC to redesing the core.

There was a post about this a few months ago.

The poster stated that he always turned his a/c off, leaving the blower fan on, a block or so from his destination to allow the fresh air to dry the evap. before shutdown preventing the moisture.

I've been doing this, and no problems yet. :)
