When you select just air not the two AC Modes (Max AC and just AC) why does my AC come on? I want only the actual air temperature, but when I choose the coolest setting - like you would if you didn't have AC (old days) the temperature is chilled. Do I have a faulty switch or is this normal?

This one got me to. If you look in the owners manual you will find that the Bi-level is also AC even though there is no snowflake symbol on the panel. The book states that the AC "May" be on in this setting. Go figure. I think that in Bi-level, if you put the temp control on heat the compressor will not come on but if you select on of the snowflake settings the compressor is always used even to generate heat. I could be wrong but that would explain the "May" be on statement in the owners manual.

AC controls

According to the service manual, the compressor clutch relay is OFF for the Off, Panel, and Floor positions and is ON for all other positions. So, your AC is operating properly.

Re: AC controls

Without looking at the the truck, I think the first position all the way on the counter Clockwize is AC MAX, then AC, and what ever is next is also AC, then as you go more clockwize what ever is next is not AC, then heat, then defrost.

In other words the 3 positions on the CCW side are AC, and the 2 on the other side do not have AC, then last is defrost which has

AC.

If the 2001 truck system is the same as the 2000 year model, your system is operating normally.

I noticed the same thing and eventually found that the compressor will (may) run in all positions except OFF and FLOOR. This knowledge involved study of the owners manual, the service manual, and maybe other sources I can no longer remember.

Short of wiring in an override switch as suggested earlier, there is not much you can do about it.
