2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission AC System Leak?

Last time I tried my AC (about two months ago, we had a couple of days near 70) it didn't seem to blow "cold" air and at the time I didn't think much of it because it wasn't really hot outside. Well the other day I was walking around my truck while it was idling and I could hear the ac compressor cycle on at what I think are the normal intervals but it would only run for a very short time. Do I have a leak and that is why the compressor only runs for a short time? Is this doing any damage to the compressor?

If the compressor is short cycling and you are getting no cooling, then yes, you are probably low on refrigerant. Look for oil stains on compressor clutch, fittings etc. bg

Was the defroster on? The AC compressor will cycle on defrost to dry the air in the cab.

I would recommend installing a U. V. dye to pinpoint the leak. The ac system oil evaporates and usually does not show stains. The ac system has a low pressure switch to protect the comp. just my 2 cents, good luck. I also am searching for my ac leak

although a leak could be anywhere, compressor seal, oring connection, hose, condenser, the evaporator is notorius for having a short life in the rams.

I've been reading the posts here about this, and aside from an obvious leak, the evaporator ends up getting replaced at some point to solve the problem. When they leak, they leak like a sponge. Very difficult to spot with leak dye, almost impossible with a sniffer. They seem to sprout multiple leaks at the fin/tube seams all at once.



Replacing mine is going to be one my winter projects. I can't wait to see the parts counter guy when I ask for A/C parts when it's 16 degrees outside
