We have a problem with a sticking accelerator pedal and are sure how to fix it.

When you step on the accelerator pedal it sticks. As you add more force off you go. Then everything is normal for awhile. Then it sticks again.

Is this the dreaded throttle cable I've been reading about that everyone hates?

Thanks for any info.

It could be the cable. When it starts to go if you look very closely you will see broken strands. When mine started to break it stretched so the throttle didn't open all the way. I suppose it could also jam up in the housing. The linkage on your injection pump sometimes gets tight and needs lube. Those coil springs where your cable hooks up to the bellcrank can also break and jam. If you see a lot of red rust around those springs, that's a possibility. My friends '98 12 valve came with the new style cable from the factory. If there is a plastic covered end that slides into the cable housing, that's the new style and is unlikely to be your problem. Old style you can see bare cable where it hooks to the bellcrank.

Sticking Pedal

BC,

I recently had the same problem. It seemed to worsen after engine heated up. Fixed problem with some WD-40 on the

linkage behind the pump just above the fuel heater, the two return springs are very weak. I'll find out if the fix is permanent.

I found that at oil change time, it's a benefit to spray the ball and cup connections on the throttle linkage with a little high tack spray. Every year or so, you also could pull the linkage off and put a dab of chassis grease in the cups and they'll never stick again.

Remove linkage?

Chris, how do you get the linkage off? Mine is installed backwards (the shop manual shows the adjusting rod towards the front; mine is at the rear). TIA

On most all diesel engines I've serviced lubing the throttle linkage is included at every oil change interval, I don't see where a Cummins would be an exception. I like using aerosol white lithium grease myself.

Thanks for the information, everyone, I'll spray the linkage this weekend and let y'all know what happens.

Don't spray the linkage, replace it. When mine started sticking , the ball was to worn for the spray to do any good. I tried to get the linkage off it was worn on and would not come of. I had to take both levers and the linkage off as a unit. New linkage is well worth the money and no more sticking.

Good luck.

I don't lube the ball ends. Because dust and grit clings really bad inside the socket. I do drive on gravel roads evey day. I have a lot of miles yet on and the ball ends and still fine. Have installed the updated throtle cable at around 90000 miles.

Did you ever find a permanent fix? Mine sticks occassionally. Last time it stuck was a few days ago. Jiggling the linkage and flooring it to WOT fixed it, but the damn linkage now leeps falling off at the ball (farthest linkage to the froont of the engine where the TPS is) Ball looks very worn and will order a replacement. Right now I'm holding it together with duct tape! 240,000 miles:rolleyes:

There was a recall for some year trucks to replace the ball and socket ends of the linkage. I got the recall for my '98 and my cousin got one on his '97. I won't have anyone messing around under my hood so I just bought the parts and will install some day. I have not had any trouble yet but I do keep the joints lubed. The parts are very cheap.

Cumminspower98 is correct, there is/was a recall to corrects that problem. I also had the same problem, the recall corrected it.
