First Look at AFE's New Filter Setup

I'm just a dumb first genner, but I'm about ready to do an NV4500 conversion.

My question to you guys is this: what kind of cool gizmos and gadgets can you get for the NV4500 to increase performance and longevity?

Are there any worthwhile products that help extend the life of the transmission? AKA filter kits etc?

What kind of lubricant should I use? I've hear Redline works well.

Does anyone make a shortshift kit for the NV4500?

Thanks

NV4500 lubricant

The NV4500 needs Castrol Syntorque, which according to Castrol, is made specifically for this transmission and is only available from DC and GM dealers. However, Standard Transmission lists it for sale.

I've been told that the short shift kits only work on 98+ trannys, so I'm going to get the top cover and shift forks from a 98+ transmission and put it on this 97 so I can use a short shifter.

Thanks everyone!

So how about the fast coolers and aftermarket filtration units... are they worth the money?

I would put in the fully splined main shaft for the 5th gear issue. I added the 'fast coolers' when they first came out for the extra oil capacity since I was always towing heavy. I think they are a great addition. Standard Transmission supplied me with all the parts including the Castrol. If you do buy it at a dealer get it from GM, it seemed to be about half the price than at Dodge. Go figure.

CB:

I installed the fast coolers and the Geno's filter on the cover and I like it. The fliter really picks up some gunk in there. I also installed the Amsoil by-pass system and with the oil analysis done I change oil, Amsoil also, once a year. About 45K miles on the oil and it's still good. I change it just for piece of mine. Maybe not necessary but I do it anyway. I just changed it yesterday. Drained the P7100 too. That way I get it all and add 3 gal.

Thats my opinion.

Thanks for the imput! I'm going to give this transmission a good look over and pick through some junkyards so I can make a frankenstein transmission... it's a 97 but I want the top plate and shift forks from a 98 so I can put a short shifter on it.

The fifth gear has the updated nut on it, so does it still need a new shaft?

If you take the nut off and slide the gear back you'll be able to see if it is "fully splined" under the nut.

One accessory you may be able to fabricate is a cup holder that will hold the super-sized bladder-buster soda, and a couple ham sammies. It should fit nicely in the area where your shifter used to be. :-laf Seriously, you don't have to use the OVERPRICED Castrol $yntorque. I used Valvoline full synthetic that was recommended by Blumenthals. HERE WE GO AGAIN WITH THE NV4500 OIL WAR... :-{} :p :-laf
