Thoght I would pick the brains of you 12ers as I run one of them electro jobs.
Buddy of mine is looking to throw a 5. 9 into his 76 suburban. He found a beat up 90' 3500 with a Cummins. I told him his best bet is to find a little later model with a P7100 pump, but I guess he can get a good deal on this. Anyhow, I was wondering what the difference was between this motor and a later... say 97' model, other than the fuel pump. Is it possible to convert this thing over to a P 7100, shouldn't be too tough if so because he plans on rebuilding it anyway. You see, he is a big block Chevy guy, and all I do is rave about the Cummins, so I don't want him to be disappointed. I know the older model Cummins were a bit low on HP, so I thought if we can put a "P" pump on it worked over by Piers, we would be in business.
One last question, will later model 5 and 6 speeds fit behind this thing?

Thanks in advance guys, I think this is a worthwhile effort as it will prevent another sale of the Dura-you-know-what.

cjohnson,
A P7100 could be put on the motor, but I hope your friend has a lot of $$. To change pumps you would need a different timing housing, timing gears, injection pump(of course), injection lines, and a bunch of other small stuff. Your friend would be better off finding one with a P7100 already on it. As for the transmission, almost any 12-valve transmission will cross over as long as you have both the bellhousing for the motor and the transmission. I just put a 97' 12-valve in a 90' truck and used the factory 3-speed auto.

Another thing he'd be missing with an early model engine is a inner cooler. He should go for a '94+ , it will be cheaper in the long run.

I've got a 94 burb and a bad Mopar. I thought the Suburban Cummins combo would be the ultimate truck for me. I never thought that it could be done though. Is there a chance. If so I gaurantee that I will do it. What do you guys think? Would it fit? Right now the burb is ready for a new engine, would hate to put in another 350 if I could put the best engine made into it.

I have seen this done in a 1984 Chev 1 Ton, the guy that did it used a Cummins out of a 1995 Dodge and the NV4500 transmission then had to adapt to the Chev transfer case he left the fan off and put electric fans on. He said that it was not to hard to do, if you take the front clip off. He also had to cut the after cooler down a little to make it fit in front of the core support. I have thought of doing the Ramburbin thing myself, just have to find the doners and the $$$$$. Good luck post some pics.
