I have a 96 3500 I pull a 14,000 lb 5th Wheel with. It's like new with 141,000miles. My motto is, "if it's broke - fix it. " Just bought a new 2010 trailer, but will never replace this truck. It has 5 spd w/Gear Vendors, Banks Power Pack, Dynomite Diesel injectors, BD exhaust manofold just to cover the basics. It last Dyno tested at 325. 2 HP and 741. 5 ft-lbs of torque. I have recently been seeing a lot of info on installing an aftermarket fuel and water seperator. These would probably do a better job than the OEM filter, but I am also sick and tired of changing the OEM filter. It seems like every after market set up I have seen has at least one 2 micron filter. I have heard I should have at least a 10 micron filter for the 12 valve and my add ons. Any advise as to what set up to buy, and what sized micron filter to use, would be appreciated. Also, where this might be installed would be helpful. I'm assuming I'll just change the OEM filter one last time and leave it on the truck.

I've had good luck with my fass pump and like it on my '97. It comes with a bracket that mounts on one of the crossmembers for the bed support by the tank

I'm with you on keeping the dependable 12 valver. I am not going to go with a fass, etc. The original lift pump is pretty reliable. Would like a little better filtration too. The OE filter is a lot easier to replace if you unbolt the m/c and lay it to the side. I think the oe's are around 12 micron, not positive on that.

OK- Fass is about the one thing I haven't looked at. I suppose because I thought all these Fass products included a fuel pump, and I had always read where the 96 lift pump is pretty good. It does have 141,000 miles on it. Also, I didn't think you needed the Fass pump until you hit 400 hp - I'm at around 330. Now, are you talking about just Fass filters or their small filter and pump? Can you give me your specific recommendation? What about my oem pump? Thanks for the replies.

Fass works great and you don't have to fill your filter with fuel.

With the exception of the FASS Platinum the FASS f/w seps are nothing to write home about, and are worse than 2nd and 3rd gen stock filters.

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? That would be instrumental in extending your fuel filter life.

I recommend one of the two following filters. Both are vacuum filters.

The Baldwin BF1212 is a 20um absolute filter with a 98% free/95% emulsified water separation rating, good at 90 GPH.

The Fleetguard FS1000 is absolute at 10um, 95% free and 95% emulsified water separation at 90GPH.

I am not sure about the stock filter, but the Wix equivalent is 95% at 15um, and 50% at 5um. Based on how Wix does their filters (which ISN'T good), I would guess the stock filter is 14um. But thats just a guess. If you call fleetguard with the OE PN they can give you the full specs, and you can decide if you want to eliminate the OE filter. Either way I would try to keep the OE fuel heater in the loop.

I have Had FASS on my 2002 for years, long enough that I bought direct from them.
My third! Motor is about to go, and at $400. 00 a pop that is where the saying burn me once comes into mind, I am looking at Air Dog before I have the most expensive FASS out there! Just my thoughts,
Rick

I have a fuel preperator that's before they split into fass and air dog, kept my original filter so now I double filter my fuel

and like I said before I don't have to charge my filters with fuel. It is suppose to take the air out of the fuel.
