i personnally would drop the pan and check the adjustment on the 2nd gear band, and add an upgraded 2nd gear band strut. the stocker is pretty weak and will flex under harder shifts and more power. of course there could be an internal problem. i lost 2nd gear on my stocker back in 00 bc of a torn front lip seal, that was shortly after i installed an aftermarket vb to increase line pressures slightly. the increased pressure i guess tore the stock seal. i would highly recommend picking 1 vender and buy all components from them. that way there is no question about all of the parts in an auto are working in harmony. that is the only way to keep an auto functioning the way it should. i have talked to guys that have mixed and matched parts and they have had nothign but problems, each component is designed and setup around the builders idea, you get to many different "ideas" in a system and you will have problems. may also try a pressure test to see how much internal leakage you have. do you research, ride in some trucks with different trans then pick the company you want to go with. that is what i did and i couldnt be happier, dont listen to someone that is just trying to make a sale!

1 vendor for all is the best advise. Some companies use higher pressures than others. Not sure how much ATS had upped there pressures, but in the older days they didn't use near as much line pressure as others. They claimed they didn't need as much cause they had more contact surface with the multi-disk converters. So I am not sure if higher pressures would take a toll on it or not.

However, my personal favorite that I have had the most experience with has been DTT. I have a friend with the Goerends that really likes it. I have also seen quite a few Suncoast trucks out there that run very well. So of course the list goes on.

I decided to heed warnings of mixmatching brands of tc and vb. I went with the ATS towing VB. I will also adjust the 2nd gear bands and see how she does. I hate to keep throwing money at an unresolved problem. Hopefully the damn thing will hold second gear hard enough to put down some reasonable performance numbers. my plans for a sub 7 second 0-60 times are not looking very promising at this point, but I'll keep you all posted on what the VB brings to the table.

i went the route you are going put the ATS VB and triple disc in with a billett input shaft with a transmission dealer installing them with their high performance parts. That was a big mistake. The second gear band broke because of the weaker stock strut costing me alot to buy a new transmission which ATS helped out a lot on because their other parts were in it. I have the 5star converter now and a racing VB. The shifts aren't harsh till you shift in lockup. I will say i am very happy with this transmission it will have it's first hook to the sled this weekend.

Good Comment... Owners Must share their future expectations and sellers should make clear that you are only as strong as the weakest Link. . Borrowed that Comment from someone. .

Code:
Alot of times its cheaper to go all out the first time than to have to do trial and error

I have the empty wallet to prove why go all out first time. :{

I agree 100%

do it right the first time!!!!!!

i bet there are hundreds of us on here that can tell you that,

learn from our mistakes ..... it's going to save you thousands of dollars in the long run

lets see:

"I'll never need over a 35psi boost gauge"

"I'll never go over 450hp to slip a con-ofe"

"I'll never need 150gph"

"I'll never need to stack chips, so I'll sell the EZ and buy a TST"

"I'll never buy more than one gauge, so the single pod will do"

the list goes on and on... .

OK as I posted earlier I ordered the ATS towing VB. I informed ATS of my concerns about second gear not enaging very hard at WOT and they recommended I adjust the external torx screw. I broke the jam nut loose turned in the set screw and..... the damn thing never really go hard to turn in. I probably turned it in 3/8" over stock. I started the truck up and it would not move in reverse. I then backed out the set screw about one turn, tightened the jam nut and she worked in all gears. shifts do seem better, but... the set screw should be at 72 inch pounds and i really never had any reistance. Should i be worried? Is there anything I can replace when I have the valve body out of the way? Strut, bands, etc???

You are describing the front band adjustment.

It should be tightened to 72 inch pounds, then backed off two turns, lock the jam nut.

If you don't get it to tighten up, then there is a problem. Most likely the strut is broken/missing. It can be fixed by dropping the pan.

I will not second Guess anyone,When We adjust any bands We Drop the VB and do it visually. If anything is mis -align it won"t be Long before it shows it"s ugly Head?.

I find it very interesting how many "experts" there are on these transmission's. And they all run one that ATS, DDT,Suncoast, or my favorite... . the Goerend. You guys should really learn how a transmission operates before offering advice just because you know someone it worked for last week or you read on here it works. If your transmission fluid smell burnt and you say it feels like there is no second gear then you have no more or very little lining left on your band. Thants the thing that stops the other thingy from spinning so power goes thru the sun gear assembly to change gear ratios. I am no expert but Dave Goerend gave me a 4 hour lesson on how things work while at his shop 2 weeks ago. I saw many trannys apart and what is changed in the valve body to change shift points and reaction. He dyno tests every trans so it shifts exactly how you want it. And his converters are awesome! I had an ATS also and that was good, but not like this. I cannot say anything bad or good about any others first hand. But the knowledge and service Dave Gorend has could only be matched at best, never exceded. Can you call any of the "big guys" out there and talk to the actual guy that built your trans with his own two hands? Or the underpaid, possibly uneducated person that was told how to assemble a transmission buy someone who learned from the guy that learned from the guy that owns one of the bigger shops. I am glad to have come across such a stand up,straight up guy like Dave and he will always have my business, and all of my close friends and anyone that asks my opinion. If any of you guys have good luck with your transmission guys that awesome! I am not bashing anyone, just complementing Gorend. A+++ service from a small town shop.

+1 expert (haha, jk)

(some of us do know what we are talking about, but it isnt easy to change peoples opinions once they have their mind set. )

Love it!

Isn't it odd to look at a transmission being built and say... ..... I can't believe that much happens, that many times with this much power.

I could have said that the front band stops the front annulus gear from turning clockwise at engine speed. What happens when the front band holds the sun gear stationary is then the front planets rotate clockwise and the over-running clutch now free-wheels on its hub. Of corse there are a couple things going on inside the valve body to time this all out correctly sending fluid thru some passages and blocking off others, but the end result is the band, witch is about 2" wide with a thin layer of grippy stuff has to completely stop the drum ( about 8" or so in diameter) from going engine rpm's(like 3100 or so if your playing around a little). This can be quite a chore for the band to do and usually becomes "glazed" on the grippy surface (thats a technical term) causing slippage before it takes a hold of the drum bringing it to a stop as the overrunning clutch has become free wheeled and there isn't much transfering power to the ground until the drums come to a complete stop. Anyone follow all that? cause there is a lot more... ... .

simmadownnow!! Guys, I appreciate everyone's opinions, but I'll pass on the ******* match. Unfortunately, I don't have a local boy like Goerends in my area. I simply made my decision based on web info and warranty. It sounds like my second gear band is toast so a billet input, built transmission and billet flywheel are in the plans. I assume everyone will say to stick to ATS since my VB and TC are from them. I guess when you pick a brand you're stuck with them to the end, eh?
