Adding Cruise Control

As far as aftermarket, the Rostra electric servo units work fine. Vacuum servos are marginal on many gas engines and useless onf a diesel. I've got three of those on trucks, just installed one on my "new" 91. 5 Cummins last week. Also have factory cruise on several vehicles. I'm another one who will not have a vehicle without cruise. And that cruise had best work very well or I won't tolerate it.

Thanks to the help of JStrasser I too was able to get the switches for the steering wheel. It really is that simple. Just plug them in and it works perfectly. What blows my mind is that I had four different parts managers at separate dealerships tell me that adding cruise, if it was even possible, would be so expensive that I wouldn't want to attempt it. All said and done I have less than $50 in parts.

Amazing. They just GUESSED without doing any research or saying I DON"T KNOW I'll look into it. They HAVE a parts rep that usually knows the skinny on such or they can call STAR and ask. I just called a BIG RV store on a propane heater with NO blower(radiant heat) for my horse trailer and was told BIG bucks. Like $600 plus for parts and at "least" $300 labor. Called another one and THEY looked up parts(many differant models and sizes,depending on square footage)and kinda knew how the install would go. Ordered one for less then $275(the smallest) and they installed it for $110. It will run you out of the L. Q. I sensed the first store and parts man was shooting from the hip by his tone and attitude on the phone.

Am I understanding you guys correctly? All you have to do on an ST truck is add the switches to the steering wheel and the cruise works? How much does cruise control cost as a factory installed option on an ST truck? I'm sure it is more than $50.

Yes, you are correct- switches only and you have cruise control.



According to the Dodge website (where you can still "build" a 5. 9L CTD- however, you really can't- anything ordered now will be a 6. 7L) MSRP for the factory cruise is $250.



BTW, I went for service to my dealer yesterday and the GM said that they are getting calls from several places around the country asking about how they did it. (Together they and I figured out how to do this- look at my first post on this topic- on page 1)

The reason I ask is because in the service manual, it states that the diesel trucks equipt with an auto use a speed control servo (which my truck does not appear to be equipt with),but manual trans trucks just use the ECM. Seems a little odd but thats what the manual states.

And is there any chance you could divulge the part numbers for the switches.

here are the part numbers & prices for the switches i put them on my 2006 with a six speed sorry i dont know about the automatic maybe someone else can answer, or try it yourself if it doesnt work i think you can take the switches back.

part#56049379-AC SWITCH SP 8050082 cost $16. 50

Works with the auto

I installed the cruise switches on the 05 ST with the automatic. Just plugged them in and the cruise worked perfectly. I don't have the part numbers with me at the moment but I can get them for you if needed.

I'd be great to get it w/o a lot of money and time spent!

Finally got a chance to check the invoice for the parts numbers. The switches needed for my 2005 w/ the automatic are the same as JHern used for his 6 speed. Works great. Even the cruise light on the dash comes on.

Well I guess I,m the first non success story here. I installed my switches on my 04. 5 auto. As previously stated ,about a ten minute job. Took for test ride. Hit on/off the cruise indicator lit on dash(I,m happy),hit set ,nothing!. Turned on and off several times,retried ,nothing!. Went back rechecked connections in steering wheel,their ok. Ran scan and found three codes.

P0572:brake switch ciruit low input

P0595:cruise control servo circuit low

P2509:ECM power input signal intermittent

No check engine light,and all else is well,so probably be removing switchs. Oh well cheep experiment.

I'm not worth a darn on electrical problems but you have 2 codes saying low power on two circuits and another with a intermittant power issue. Anything wired in the brake switch circuit or such? Cruise should work or a servo is needed? Just stabbing at it. If you really want cruise you could take it in and have it looked into.

any follow up on your cruise woes. . did you ever get it working?. . I have a 2006 ST 2500 Quad 4 x 4 cummins and I would love to have cruise. . the truck has everything I wanted except cruise and I figured I wouldnt like anything aftermarket... . if I can make it factory I would LOVE it

Cam. . Your reply in the other thread got my attention, so I came back here to see who didn't get the cruise to work.



According to Jeff's signature, his truck is an 04. 5 auto. I'm not 100% certain about the 04. 5's, but my 04 has a small vacuum pump on the passenger fender well that drives the cruise. This only exists on the 03 - 04 (and possibly 04. 5) trucks with an automatic and cruise. The same truck with a stick won't have the pump.



According to others on this site, the vacuum pump was eliminated beginning in 05, so it should work fine on your 06.

Steve, to remove the covers you need to turn the steering wheel 90° and then you can get to the two 10mm bolts on the back of the steering wheel, these bolts will remove the airbag. The rest is obvious from there, remove two phillips screws and the covers come right out. When you remove the covers you will find the CC wires plugged into the covers, unhook the wires and just plug them into the new switches.



I did this on an 04. 5 ST sixspeed equipped truck, that a local member has.



One note: Disconnect the negative battery cables for 10 minutes before working with the airbag!
