2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Adding cruise control

I got a 95 cummins w/o cruise control. Has anyone ever put a factory system in one of these trucks. Looks like the plug is under the hood where the servo mounts. I know i would need a new clock ring, but am wondering if the rest of the wiring will be there in the cab and in the steering column?

Do not know if there is enough in truck to make this work , too many issues maybe , brake sw , goes through computer ?
It may be easiest to get a kit from a parts house , so you get all you need .

I had to quit using my factory cruise control due to a progressively nasty habit of accelerating to set point + 15-20 mph before finally easing back down to set point 20-30 miles later. Since I don't enjoy unsolicited conversations with the boys in blue, I stopped using it. Rather than replace the factory unit right now, I had an aftermarket cruise control salvaged from another rig sitting on the shelf and I installed that one instead. It was pretty easy to do and it works great. :-laf Figure I'll finally get around to fixing the factory system after I've finished using up this one.

What brand of aftermarket cruise are you using? I heard many of the aftermarket kits wouldn;t work well with diesels because of the harder throttle pressure.

The kit I’m using is an AudioVox CCS100. I think I got it from J. C. Whitney, but if you run a Google search, you will get a number of hits. Search “AudioVox, CCS100” on e-Bay and you’ll find several kits on there as well.



I have found it to hold a steady speed very well regardless of load or hills. It will pull the throttle wide open if it needs to, but won’t if it doesn’t have to. For example, if you have it set on 70 mph an hit “resume” while doing 35 mph, it will pull the throttle open only far enough to achieve a (non-adjustable) rate of acceleration. It seems to accelerate about the same regardless of whether I’m running empty or pulling a trailer light enough to not require WOT. I actually like the way this one works better than the cruise control the truck came with.



For installation, I removed the factory actuator and cable. I installed the CCS100 unit on the back side of the cross member under the radiator (where I thought would be a bit cooler) and orientated it with the wiring connector down. A piece of hose out of the kit was used to extend the factory vacuum hose. I mounted the pull cable and its sleeve in the same place as the factory set-up had been using the assortment of parts out of the kit. For the speed pick-up, it can connect to the existing VSS of most vehicles, but I choose to use the included magnets and mag pick-up on the front end of the driveshaft. This allowed me to set it up for use down to 25 mph whenever I want. It taps into a wire at the brake switch as well as an accessory power circuit that switches off with the key. I found the included instruction manual reasonably easy to follow and everything needed for my installation was in the box.

I put a factory cruise control on a friends truck a few years back. Dodge did sell a kit for them to add it, with everything included for installation. Had the vaccumm "ball" that mounted under the hood, the wire plug harness even the switches that mounted to the steering wheel. Took us a couple of hours to mount everything. Check with your dealership and see if its still offered, and them maybe check with one of the online parts places to get it cheaper.
