I really miss having leather, thinking about trading because of it. I've been told by some people that adding leather to my truck would look and feel just like factory stuff. Is this true? I would hate to spend $1300 for leather and be sorry that I had done it. Let me know what you think.

All depends on who does it. There's an Auto Trim here that I would'nt hesitate to have them do the job. As good if not better (quality of leather) than factory. The workmanship is important.

wwcd2,

What don't you like about leather? It wears a lot faster, it's hot, it's cold, it makes your back sweaty in hot weather? Or is it Dodge leather you don't like? Your kinda scaring me. The Chevy I had before had leather, it looked pretty bad when I traded it, full of cracks on the edge of the seat, from sliding in and out. I like the fact that I can get soaking wet messing with the irriagation, and still jump in my truck and go. Now I have to find something to put on the seat and drive home in my underwear.

The only reason I got leather was, the velour was a little too phycidelic (sp?) for me. The 97's design was OK, 98... flashback time.
Also, I wanted the power seat, and the thermometer, so it was only a few bucks more.
BTW my dealer showed me a Dakota that a local shop did the leather in. It was at least at good as the factory, and the doors had leather too. Really nice, tastefully done. Ask the shop if you can see some stuff they did, and who in the shop did it. Get the same guy. You don't want to see a job that a 20 yr vet did, then get the guy that started last month.

After I had choosen and ordered my truck from one dealer with leather, I was talking with another dealer about the leather option. They told me that for the same amount they could have a shop put in better leather including covering the whole seat and the back seat as well.

It was too late for me, since mine was already being built. I would almost say that you would come out better with after market. Sounds thicker and more coverage.

I'm going to go look at some trucks that have been done by these guys tomorrow. They order the leather as a kit ready to install, won't know til I see it a guess. $1250, doesn't seem too bad. Thanks guys, really would have been hard to trade my pride and joy.

Hi SWAYSE, I worked in the oil patch out in that area a while when I was younger. Is that Locust tree still there? I wanted leather when I bought my truck but decided the factory leather was too stiff/hard. I did look at a truck in McAlester Ok. that had been sent out somewhere and leather installed, it was much softer than the factorystuff but the truck didnt have the other options I needed.

Swayze,
Keep your truck and get the aftermarket leather. It's thicker and you get more for your money. Here's why... .
There is very little leather in the factory package, just the front seats to be exact. The only two areas that have leather are the area you sit your butt on,and the seat back you rest your back against, that's all! The sides of the front seat, the center seat, and the entire back seat are all plain vinyl! To me that's an expensive piece of leather.
I work at a car dealership, and I send alot of cars to get aftermarket leather installed. All of the seats are covered in much better leather, for about $12-1300. 00 bucks.

Last year my wife gave me a very nice leather recliner for fathers day. While I was doing some remodeling I accidently put a hole in the back of the chair. It was vinyl. When I called the store that it was purchased from they told me that a leather chair is only leather in the seat area. Are autos the same. Something to consider.
