I know that this might sound like a very basic question for those of you who are experienced in adding electrical accessories.

I've noticed that there are quite a few empty sockets for relays in the power distribution box in the engine compartment. Can you utilize these for adding relays for after market add on's or would it involve too much, "surgery" to the factory harness?

If relays were to be mounted in a seperate location, where would be a good accessable area and what type of enclosure have you used?

As you can tell by my question, I'm planning to add a few.

Thanks in advance.

Good idea!

The relays used are available outside of DC (I think Bosch and Tyco make them). It all depends on whether you can identify and locate/purchase the 3/16" (I think) uninsulated crimp tabs that fit into the receptacles from underneath. You would also need the proper crimping tool.

As far as mounting relays elsewhere, in the engine compartment along the fresh air duct is a pretty good place, it's relatively cool and dry there compared to other places in the engine compartment. Better yet would be the interior behind the panel under the steering column. It really depends on what you are doing with them, and how far the wires need to go.

Bosch micro relays that are physically and electrically identical to the micro relays in the PDC are available from Wrangler NW Power Products. Also available are . 187" and . 250 " female tabs. These tabs are pushed into the relay base ("socket") and lock into place. No crimping tool is required.

I have five of the Bosch relays in a project box. These relays switch sport headlamps and PIAA 60XT driving lamps, as well as provide a low-beam-on-with-high-beam function. The project box is mounted to the top of my PDC. One consideration in wiring and mounting the project box was the ability to access the inside of the PDC.

??????

Hi...

i'm totally confused on relay's, i've ben reading different posts on relays, and how member's use them for this and that, but does a relay really do what you can't just wire from the battery to a switch to operate a light or whatever it's going to be used for?

because i've been tinkerding with the idea of cutting and bypassing the trailer light wiring to be able to switch trailer lights on/off at night for trucker's who blink thier hdlights, and i figured just put a switch on that line, but with this relay talk

i'd be hard pressed to figure how or why to use them.

thanks for letting be ramble on... .

The main thing is that you can take a low current signal for the relay activation. Then the relay can connect a high current device. For example, there is a recall because of over loading the ignition switch. The recall uses a relay to run the heater fan instead of directly off the switch. The Radio Shack relays that I use require something like one tenth of an amp to activate. They can carry a 30 amp load on the load side.

First of all, hello to all from an ex-lurker. This is my second Dodge truck, but first diesel and I have learned a lot from reading the posts on this forum. Now to business - I added some auxiliary backup lights and would like to plug the relay into an empty slot in the PDC. I know about the spade connectors, but how do you take the PDC apart to get them in, as the spare slots have no connectors in them? TIA

The PDC is not a very friendly place to work. The amount of wires and shortness of them make it almost impossible to do anything. I had to remove the battery to get enough room to turn the PDC over to see the connections. I had the same idea of adding relays in the vaccant holes to power my pusher pump. The pusher pump relay does not work if the starter or glow plugs are on. I was going to pick up the power from the spare pins on those relays to keep the pusher off. I ended up just branching into the wires and put the relays underneath the dash.
