2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Adding some Bass to my stereo

I bought a Kenwood Excelon head unit & some infinity reference speakers for my truck (the component type in front) & the difference is very, very nice, but... I want more bass at low listening volumes. My little powered subwoofer hooked to this computer has the kind of kick I want. What do I need to get more bass sound without adding a big box in the back? I'd prefer to put it under the front seat. I don't listen to anything very loud, I just want to feel/hear some bass. I know nada about amps, etc. . this is the nicest sound sytem I've ever had, but I need more bass to offset the sweet tunes the Cummins sings

Get a Bazooka Bass Tube. They have their own built in amp. Crutchfield sells them.

you need to get with a local stereo retailer and not circuit city. about a year ago i was looking for a system for a crx i had and ran across a company that makes boxes. i thinkl its called stealthboxes. i also read an artical in a mag where they take the middle section of the seats in a dodge and hallow it out. then they install a box for a 10" sub. you cant tell its in there unless you sit in the middle cus the seat is hard. mount your amp under any of the seats. just make sure it can get circulating air. ive had one quit on hot days cus it got to hot. good luck

get about a 200 watt amp should be fine for what you discribed and the MTX loaded box goes under our rear seats I have had mine since me first ram 98 and moed it to my 02 love the some and fit. You can still get to the jack and all I velcroed my amp to the rear wall behind the seat and it has never oever heated it is alot larger then I sugessted for you any question let me know

I am going to build my own center seat box and load it with a JL 10". It only needs . 5 cu/ft of space and doesn't require alot of power. You lose no rear under seat storage as well as seat up storage. I use that area alot for spare fishing gear and clothing, and I don't want it on the seat.



I never, ever have someone riding in the center seat position. And, it's not that comfortable anyway. Seems like a small price to pay for the added bass. And in this location, 1 10" woofer will be more than enough for most of us, in fact, an 8" may be all you need. I also intend just to thicken up the sound a little, so a wall of woofers and lots o watts doesn't do me any good. I don't need to be heard outside the rig, I just want it clean!

are you running a stock head unit and speakers? in my wifes car i ran 2 pioneer 6x9's of a 300watt amp and it sounded better than the stock system with a sub. you'll be suprised at how much low end sound a good set of 6x9's with the right amp will put out. i am getting ready to trade my 10" mtx for a good set of door speakers. then again i'd rather listen to my engine than the stereo most of the time. if you go with that powered sub let me know how it sounds. have fun

Thanks for all the ideas. I ordered a 10" Infinity 1030W sub & a Profile MSX mono amp (both on sale) with the wiring kit, the total was less than $200. I'm going to modify my center seat & make a box to mount it facing down like others here have done. That should be plenty of bass for me & let me keep my rear seat floor area.

Yeah, I was looking at that, but I pulled my center seat yesterday & I think I'm going to build it my way using the old cover.

I have some ash cabinet 3/4 plywood scraps, is the particle board really enough better for me to justify buying a sheet????

Two Rockford 10" HX2 2000W fit easy under my back seat they only require 0. 50 to 0. 85 cuft sealed, add a 1000 BD mono block and you'll enjoy some tight BASS. I have this setup and two more in a custom ported box( and another 1000 BD mono block) which doubles as back seat center consol, it is also removable. If your just looking for a little punch, I would recomemed one of these subs in a 1. 25 - 1. 50 cuft ported box with a 500 BD mono block amp.

I have that box that is on ebay, and let me tell you it looks great and sounds even better. I put a 12" alpine type r in it with 500w and it hits hard. I really like how it turned out. My two amps, electronic crossover, and sub are all under the front seats leaving me with all the room in the back. Look into it!!!

I just ordered the Pioneer DEH-HP77DA head unit, and two KIcker Solo-Baric LA5 S10L52 subs, with a Sony XM-DS1600P5 class d amp to push them. The only problem now, is that I cant find any enclosures that will fit behind my seat (standard cab). Still haven't decided what to put in my doors, or what to do for tweeters yet either.

I used the 6. 5" infinity reference component in front & the regular reference in the back, very satisfied with the results from Crutchfields recommendation

As far as material for the box in your center seat, there are lot's of options. I prefer MDF. It is easy to work, seal and is extrememly rigid. It is denser than particleboard and will not flex as much as ply.



Is it worth an entire sheet? I dunno. I work in the lumber industry, so "scraps" become available from time to time.

JL Makes a replacement for the center seat with a 12" Sub concealed. . I was told it makes "Crazy, stupid bass" when cranked up to the kind of levels I like my music at. . Hmm, an idea! hehe. . The only problem with building your own box, is that you need to measure the volume of air, to make sure it is enough air to make the speaker work efficiently, otherwise, it may still sound good, but it will be detrimental to the speaker(s) in the long run. Just a thought to keep in mind.

Just an update, I did wind up using the hotbox off e-bay with a 10" Infinity & 200 watt amp. It's just what I needed, capable of much more than I use, but real nice crisp bass with a little thump. Even with the single 10" you can make it obnoxious if you turn it up, but for me the added fill at normal volumes is just right.
