MUCH of what's discussed here, and in a number of similar threads where various aftermarket add-ons being analyzed and discussed, revolves around various owner and manufacturers ideas and preferences of what is "adequate" - or enough to get by, and what might provide a better margin of overhead to handle unexpected circumstances.

The OEM pusher pump on my '02 truck (yeah yeah, I know it's not common rail, but the basic principle still applies!) was USUALLY adequate, and lots of trucks racked up many uneventful miles with them - BUT, there WERE enough premature failures, and documented instances showing the OEM pushers were marginal in output and PSI/volume, that many like me, chose to install what had been shown to provide a significantly increased margin of performance.

But even at that, the best aftermarket setup CAN cause issues and problems if not properly installed and maintained!

There will always be those totally content with all the systems and components their trucks came supplied with, and resistant to any "Snake Oil" aftermarket stuff - and it's also quite true that in MANY cases, the aftermarket stuff will NOT increase reliability and dependability in a provable manner - and in those cases, and for guys like me, the "warm and fuzzy feeling" of knowing or thinking there IS a substantially increased margin of safety or performance over the OEM stuff is all we will ever obtain - and that's just fine for some of us! ;)

Actually Cerberusiam I don't necessarily think Ihave the best, I feel there are many good options. I have a great setup, but there are many other great setups out there as well. I do know a long time Cummins mechanic helped design my pump/filter combo. I do have a problem when people that have no clue what they are taking about try and say my setup is unreliable crap and attack somone who is genuinely tryin to help all of us.

Thats the point, what is "best" is so subjective it doesn't translate at times. What you have is great and if it works for you, then who can say it is bad.

"Best" is so realtive to a personal preference it is hard to define. Ckelly, TCDiesel, AEdelheit, along with PowerJoke (big long fight over Walbro many moons ago) all think they have the "best" setup for their needs, and, I doubt anybody could convince them otherwise. It is all relative to what one wants to believe and how well it suits their needs.

What would I do? That is a lot easier.

I happen to believe that removal of entrained air has some long and short term benefits. Comes from spending hours communicating with Pittsbutgh Diesel and several long haul truckers using them. That leaves AD and FASS for the pump systems. I also happen to believe an additional fuel heater at the pump has some benefits. Since I believe in supporting locally (web site) that leaves a FASS from Genos Garage for a fuel pump. Titanium becuase I think it is th eonly one that has the air removal as part of it, you can get an good water seperators for it, and it has a fuel heater. Considering some of the prices for the HD filtration kits plus the cost of a pump, I think it is a wash. I WILL SEND THE WARRANTY CARD IN THE VERY FIRST THING. Thats the important part simply because it doesn't matter what you buy you could get a lemon. Every single manufacturer has had problems with quality of supplied parts.

My Recipe:

FASS Titanium with 10 um fuel filter and best water sperator available plus fuel heater

GDP fuel cannister with 1/2 fittings for suction

3/8 fuel line to the stock cannister

Retain stock cannister, fuel heater, and use 5 or 7 um filter

3 um filter between stock cannister and CP-3

I don't know of anything "better" than the above, IMO. :)

Thanks for the come back. This is exactly what I was looking for. You have a sequential filtering system (biggest to smallest @ CP-3) The down side to this as I see it is that you have 4 filters to change because it is sequential. How often are your change intervals and what criterial do you use to make that decision? CKelly suggested fuel line pressure w/ a gauge. I live in MT so the fuel heater is a good idea.

I am monitoring fuel pressure at the CP-3 and can tell you from 1st hand experience when the filter in the OE housing plugs you get lower pressures at the CP-3 with a stock pump. When you go to the FASS that pressure drop may not be anywhere near as critical as it will push more fuel thru partially plugged filters. Monitor fuel pressure at the CP-3 and get used to what it runs.

From what I have seen and AH64ID has reported the pressure drop on clean filters even thru a 3 um and a separate water filter even with the stock in-tank pump is neglible, maybe 1 psi. AH64ID reported in the cold the extra fuel heater made a noticeable difference after running for a while so there is benefits there in cold weather.

I would monitor fuel pressure and change the filters at least once per year. A lot more is going to depend on fuel quality with multiple filters so it is not a set time period. You may even be able to go longer by just changing the FASS filters as they will catch the bulk of the garbage leaving the others to do finer filtration.

I now have the BF 1212 before the stock canister, the stock canister has a Baldwin PF7977, and i just added a Donaldson P551313 before the CP3. I am sure ist is good filtration but i have a couple questions
Will it restrict too much as to not to have enough return fuel for cooling?
How long should i expect my in tank pump and/or CP3 to live?
