2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission ADHD Blinkers?

About a year ago I borrowed a trailer, hooked it up and used it for a couple of days. Since that date my blinkers run at warp speed. I have checked the fuse(s) etc... all appears well. The trailer's wiring harness obviously did "something" to the circuit, but I have no idea what?



Any ideas?

I didn't think about the bulbs because all the turn signal lights work, at warp speed as mentioned. Could it have a bad bulb... and the bulb still function?

Normally a fast blinking turn signal indicates a burned out lamp bulb.

If you have visually inspected and confirmed that all turn signal bulbs are working normally you might inspect the seven pin connector at the back of your truck and the related wiring behind it for damage or corrosion.

A replacement turn signal/emergency flasher relay is not very expensive and might be worth replacing just to eliminate a potential cause.

If it is the relay in the black plastic box, under the hood on the drivers side fender well, I already replaced that one. That one had no effect on the hyperactive blinker. Maybe the trailer recepticle is the culprit? It was on the truck when I bought it and a bird trying to build a nest wired it.

I don't know where the relay is located. I'm thinking I replaced one in my '01 Ram and it was in the cubbyhole at the driver's side end of the dash. I may be mistaken, that has been several years ago.

I don't know about your '97 but in the '01 and later trucks you can eliminate any questions about the seven pin receptacle by simply separating the connectors at the back of the receptacle if it is a factory towing package.

Replace your flasher. Too-fast flashing is a sign of an overloaded/worn-out/burned -up flasher.

Is the flash rate erratic both sides or one?? If one side it could indicate a load on that turn circuit and it does not HAVE to be a bulb to do it - bulbs are merely resistor loads and something else could do the same thing. If both sides then a faulty flasher (drivers cubby - blue unit) is likely. If you're trailering then I would replace with a logic-unit flasher. These have their own internal 'clock' for flash rate and don't care what bulb loads are connected.
