Got bored sittin around waiting for my injection pump to arrive so i figured i'd check and adjust my valves, first thing i noticed was no 1 intake was way out, after looking closely found the push rod was bent, not enough to get stuck but it would not rotate 360 deg. in the shaft, can't tell how long it has been bent theres not much scaring on the rod just 2 little polished areas where it had contacted the head a few times, i checked all the others and they all look good. any body know what might have caused this??

hopefully cummins local here has a push rod in stock, i,m suppose to leave for vacation Fri. still waiting on the injection pump and now this, it has not been a good week.

on a better note while the valve covers were of i striped the paint of and took a buffing wheel to them, they polish up quit nice i think they look better than chrome and allot cheaper.

Rick-

Over-revving that old 12-valve, huh? Just kidding--I was told that's what caused a bent rod on a gas motor I once had; don't know and can't guess what caused yours.

I'm actually posting to say your valve covers look great! Thanks for posting the pic. What did you use to take the paint off?

That paint was hell!!

I tried 3 kinds of stripper finally found some prostrip at lowes it's for poly. and marine finishes took it right off then i hit it with a wire wheel and a small buffer with some red rouge took about hour and a half.

I did a search thru the archives looking for bent push rods every thing i found was always the intake on no. 1 that got bent first and second gens something must be causing it .

Hey RDusch , where did you get those 45 degree rubber pvc connectors on the air filter inlet tube(hose) . I have been wanting to do that for about four years now but I cant find any 45s. All I can find is 90s . I got some tubing I just need the 45s.

here are the part no. 's they also sell 4" aluminium tubing.

Sam At ASA modifieds sells a nice intake also his is 4" mandrell bent tubing.

here are the part no. 's

2 45HL4 Rubber Intake Elbow 45 Degree 4"

5 AF-400 T-Bolt Clamp for 4" ID Intake Hoses

i got them from air flow systems

Rick, normally when a push rod gets bent it's due to incorrect valve lash. Once you get this fixed, I'd suggest you go 10K and recheck. Your situation is not very common on these engines and it may indicate some extra wear in the valve train. If you check it a 10K and all is well, with no further adjustments needed, then you should be ok to extend your next check 30K or thereabouts.

bob.

ps: the ASA kit is a nice little enhancement. It looks good and seems to be good quality too.

I will say this, the turbo just "talks up a storm" with the ASA on it.

Rick,

Thanks for the info on the tubing and elbow source. I just ordered it for my truck. Will look better tha the stock setup and should flow a little better from the smooth inside surface. I already have Smokey's BHAF setup and this will go well with that.

Most commonly, the pushrod bends when the valve smacks the piston. In the B, the valve hits flat but it can still get tweaked enough that it won't seal as well as it should.

I did the same to my valve covers some years ago. I agree that aluminum looks better without the paint on it. I used lacquer thinner to strip them.
