I have hear that by tightening the stock gov springs that it will raise the defueling RPM's somewhat. I was wondering if anyone knows how many clicks to tighten the nuts without sacrificing too much driveability.



Before everyone starts giving me crap, I know that a 3K gov kit is only $150, but I am a poor college student trying to help out other poor college students obtain more HP. Also please don't give me crap because I have a nice truck and I am in college. Trust me my old s-10 had seen better days before I got the cummins. For the work that I do the truck for helps put me through college.
 
I backed some off the other day, the customer did not measure them before tightening them about four or five clicks.



Do you have access to vernier calipers/dial calipers? If so, use the "butt end" per the GSK instructions to measure the distance from the end of the stud to the top of the nut. You might have to do it a couple of times (dial calipers measurement to get a consistent reading).



On this particular truck (215 hp '913 pump) . 065 seemed to offer max drivability, with some increase in revs, defueling. I'm guessing it s/b about . 020-. 035 stock. My local injection shop usually says one click, then plus two. .



The wire seal was broken, when it came to me. It was also missing on the "high idle screw", so lets presume the high idle screw was turned in some, this will likely effect your outcome to. .



ok enough rambling. . you might find it quicker to modify an old long screwdriver and go in from the top (removed afc housing), so the shut-off solenoid, and linkages aren't disturbed by going in from the side. Mr Murphy will assure that you make several attempts, until you are pleased with the results. :)



I think you will utimately find you'll want the gov. springs to achieve the desired results.

Just tightening the governor springs you can only go about 1 - 2 clicks before you start running into starting problems. Very little gain for the work involved.



Stock stud protrusion is . 040 to . 055". Each click adds . 010"- . 012".



If you are dealing with a 5 speed, screw in the high idle screw and verify that the throttle cable is adjusted so you can actually use all of the throttle. Often times, you'll have to put a shim on the throttle pedal inside the cab so it will pull more cable at WOT. This will normally get you 300-400 more usable RPM. Be aware the more fuel in the upper RPM range gets EGT too high in a hurry.



Don't adjust the high idle screw on the automatics because it affects the kickdown cable adjustment.

My '95 would turn 2700 or 2800 before defueling. I turned in the governor springs a couple of clicks and the fast idle screw about half way. It still starts good and will turn 3000. That's as fast as I will ever want to run it so I'm ok. EGT is ok if I have the RPM high. If the RPM is low the 370 injectors will run the EGT thru the roof in a hurry. Of course, the RPM shown by the poor excuse for a tach we have may be subject to dispute.
