Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Adjusting the valves

I have a friend of mine with a ' 97 12v auto 4x4, 160,000 miles, has never had the valves adjusted or do they need adjusting? If so how do you adjust them and what is intake and exhaust lash set at, and do you need special tools?

If I use the alternator turning method rotate it clockwise to turn motor in the correct way to adjust the valves? Adjusting them with cam on the base circle is like a solid cam in a hot rod, intake on base circle, adjust the exhaust of the same cylinder, then vesa versa, repeat until all done. This is accuarate for a diesel as well I assume. Thanks for the help.

They WILL need it. The previous 2 owners of my Ram never did it. They were WAY out of specs. Had 141k at the time.
