best motor oil

My dodge dealer tell me I need to adjuste the bands in my transmission.

The truck is an 2006, diesel, 2wd with 48RE. I tow 25% of the time with 4000 pounds. With 80k miles and the transmission shifs better than ever.

Have to say I have deep trans. pan and have chanded the fluid and filter three times or every 25k miles.

What if I dont adjuste the bands, will I reduce the life of the transmission?

How do I know when the bands need adjustment?

Thanks

Dan

Dan,

Per the 2006 Dodge service manual, the bands are supposed to be adjusted when the transmission fluid is changed every 30,000 miles (recommended interval). Failure to regularly adjust the bands might never lead to a problem for a long time, but it can ultimately lead to the bands slipping, which in turn can case the transmission to slip and overheat.

Next time you change the transmission fluid be sure and adjust the bands. The pan has to be off to do the adjustment, but it's otherwise a simple and quick procedure.

Best regards,

i had my '05 fluid changed and they ajusted the bands and it hasn't been right since, but we all get different techs.

Sounds like they MIS-ADJUSTED the bands!

Just one more reason I try to do all my own work whenever possible. At least that way I know what was and wasn't done, and have no one to blame but myself if it isn't perfect.

Need more info on that!

Would like to do that myself, but you said simple and quick, please expand on that, as i would be laying on my back to do that... . !

Ken,

Here's the procedure from the Dodge service manual.

ADJUSTMENT - BANDS

FRONT BAND

The front (kickdown) band adjusting screw is

located on the left side of the transmission case

above the manual valve and throttle valve levers.

(1) Raise vehicle.

(2) Loosen band adjusting screw locknut (Fig. 74).

Then back locknut off 3-5 turns. Be sure adjusting

screw turns freely in case. Apply lubricant to screw

threads if necessary.

(3) Tighten band adjusting screw to 8 N·m (72 in.

lbs. ) torque with Inch Pound Torque Wrench

C-3380-A, a 3-in. extension and an appropriate

Torx™ socket.

CAUTION: If Adapter C-3705 is needed to reach the

adjusting screw, tighten the screw to only 5 N·m

(47-50 in. lbs. ) torque.

(4) Back off front band adjusting screw 1-3/4 turns.

(5) Hold adjuster screw in position and tighten

locknut to 41 N·m (30 ft. lbs. ) torque.

(6) Lower vehicle.

REAR BAND

The transmission oil pan must be removed for

access to the rear band adjusting screw.

(1) Raise vehicle.

(2) Remove transmission oil pan and drain fluid.

(3) Loosen band adjusting screw locknut 5-6 turns.

Be sure adjusting screw turns freely in lever.

(4) Tighten adjusting screw to 8 N·m (72 in. lbs. )

torque (Fig. 75).

(5) Back off adjusting screw 3 turns.

(6) Hold adjusting screw in place and tighten lock-

nut to 34 N·m (25 ft. lbs. ) torque.

(7) Position new gasket on oil pan and install pan

on transmission. Tighten pan bolts to 17 N·m (13 ft.

lbs. ) torque.

(8) Lower vehicle and refill transmission with

Mopar ATF +4, Automatic Transmission fluid.

Trans is bogging or something when I am in first and stomp on it to get into a lane. The engine is gaining RPM but it doesn't get out of the trans. It is not a slip as far as I can tell. Never experienced anything like it in any vehicle. Hard to describe.

I'm a little confused by your description of the symptoms. If the engine rpm is rising, yet you feel engine power isn't being transmitted to the drivetrain, then by definition the transmission must be slipping. Now assuming there's nothing wrong with the engine, the feeling of "bogging" when pushing on the accelerator pedal is usually associated with the transmission not downshifting to a lower gear... but you said the transmission is in first gear, so it can't be that.

It certainly wouldn't hurt to replace the transmission pressure sensor, solenoid, the output shaft speed sensor, and adjust the bands. If none of that helps, it could be an electrical problem.

Have you checked for diagnostic trouble codes from the PCM (Powertrain Control Module).

Good luck,

Hello, my name is Ariel, i have a Dodge Ram 2500 2008 cummins 5.9 and 48RE transmission, now has 100.000 kilometers on it, first bands adjustment and second oil changes, i have an issue with it last weekend when i decided to make that "easy" work, first of all i adjusted front band (loose lock nut and tighten adjusting screw to 70 in-lb and then back off 1 and 3/4 turns, finally tighten lock nut and holding adjuster at the same time at 30 ft-lb and done this part), then remove the pan and old filter, so, now time to adjust the rear band(loosing the lock nut and tighten the adjuster to 72 in-lb and then back adjuster 3 turns and tighten lock nut at 25 ft-lb while holding adjuster in place and rear band done, new filter, new atf+4 oil, till here all fine, the gears engages nicely and softly, but.... when i put the shifter lever in 2 (between D and 1) before engage the 2º, the transmission make a hunt, when 2 is enagged the transmission goes fine, but in 1º from cero km/h till engage the 2º gear seems like move and leave and then move again, the official chrysler service tec said me that can be the rear band that it is too tigh, but i would like your opinion, advise and/or your recommendation,
the transmission before service work perfect,
i'll thank you very very much your words.-
